Four different Saints had two RBI in game two and first-year
Liam Hickey pitched three and a third strong innings, but a late comeback in game two sent the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a twin bill loss to Union on Sunday afternoon at Tom Fay Field.
Timothy Connor,
Noah Bolduc,
Sean Desjardins, and
Mike Siano all had two RBI in game two to lead offensively, while Hickey threw 3.1 innings giving up just three hits and one run while striking out two.
Game 1: St. Lawrence 0, Union 14 (8 innings)
Game one started slowly with neither team gaining much traction in the first two innings.
Michael Hutchins, who started the game struck out three batters in two innings pitched and didn't give up a hit.
Union would finally get the bats going in the top of the third scoring four runs off a home run, a pair of singles, and a fly out.
The Saints would finally get a hit in the bottom of the fifth when
Matt Davis scorched a double to left center field. He would get as far as third, but the Saints could not capitalize.
The Garnet Chargers would break the game open further in the sixth as they ballooned the score to 8-0, then scored six more in the eighth to salt it away.
St. Lawrence's
Brenden O'Neil,
Brendan Karadenes,
Boden Driscoll,
Sam Fosberg,
Teaghin Andre, and
John Igoe pitched the final six innings in relief of Hutchins.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 8, Union 12 (9 innings)
The bats in game two came out much quicker with both teams drawing blood in the first two innings.
Union struck first in the top of the first for a one-run lead but it became a one-run deficit in the bottom when a single, walk, and hit by pitch loaded the bases for Bolduc. The senior swiped a single through the right side to give the Saints the 2-1 lead.
The Garnet Chargers came back with three runs in the second inning off an RBI single and a two-run home run, which was answered right back by Connor, who hit a two-run home run of his own to make it 4-4.
St. Lawrence would claim their first lead of the day later in the third when Siano sent a single to center field scoring
Jack Finnegan and Desjardins to make it 6-4. That lead would double to four in the fourth when Desjardins smoked a double to right center scoring
Brett Federico and Connor.
From there, Union would chip away getting a run in the fifth before breaking the game open in the seventh. Powered by walks and hit by pitches the Garnet Chargers put up six runs to go up 11-8.
The Scarlet and Brown would struggle to threaten the rest of the way as the game went to a 12-8 final.
Next up:
St. Lawrence will be back home this coming week when they host Plattsburgh at Tom Fay Field on Wednesday, April 17 for a doubleheader.
