Allison Kloft had four RBI,
Sofia Berryhill threw a complete game and the St. Lawrence University softball team battled to another split doubleheader in Liberty League play Friday afternoon against RIT.
The Tigers handed the Saints a 13-5 loss in game one before the Saints bounced back with an 11-1 blowout in the second game. The results bring their record to 14-7 overall on the season, 2-2 in conference play.
Game 1: St. Lawrence 5, RIT 13
St. Lawrence wasted no time in the top of the first, plating the game's first run.
Maeve Thompson reached via an infield single to second base, then advanced to second on a
Vivian Johnson groundout. First-year Kloft continued her torrid start to the season by launching a double into the left-center gap to bring Thompson around.
Meredith Rose notched an RBI, scoring Kloft with a Texas Leaguer to shallow left field, and then benefited from a defensive miscue by the Tigers.
Izzy Melanson stepped up and drove a single up the middle, but the ball deflected off the corner of the center fielder's glove and rolled to the wall. That allowed Rose to score and make it 3-0.
The first inning would prove to be an offensive inning for both sides. RIT's leadoff triple ultimately gave them their first run of the game, then Rienstra used some opportune baserunning to advance to second on a sacrifice bunt, third on a wild pitch, then came around to score on a passed ball to make the score 3-2 Saints. Later in the inning, Maria Minemier grounded one through the middle infield to tie the game with an RBI knock. The score was 3-3 after one.
RIT then added another big inning in the second. Emma Merkley singled to kick off the inning, then was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt, and third on an infield single by Lillian Rienstra. Two runs then come across the plate on a groundout and a single, then a two-run home run made it 7-3 Tigers.
The Saints kept the offense coming in the third, after a Kloft leadoff base on balls. She swiped second, and was driven home by Fritz on an RBI single to right center. However, RIT had an answer in the bottom half of the inning. Rienstra returned to the scoresheet with an RBI knock to drive home a run and make it 8-4.
St. Lawrence cut back into the RIT lead again, this time in the top of the fifth after Johnson tucked a leadoff triple into the right field corner to put herself 60 feet away. Kloft then recorded her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly. That made the score 8-5 RIT.
The Tigers would hold the Saints to no more runs after the sac fly, they plated five of their own in the bottom half of the inning to force an eight-run rule initiation, and the game ended in the fifth at a 13-5 final score.
Kloft's two ribbies were a team-high for the Scarlet and Brown. The first year from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. tacked on a walk and two runs scored as she went 1-for-1 on the day. Melanson was charged with the loss on the mound, throwing one and two-thirds' innings while allowing five earned runs on seven hits, walking two.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 11, RIT 1
It was another quick start for the Scarlet and Brown in the second game of the twin bill, and this time they were not matched by their opponents in the bottom half of the inning.
RIT's pitcher loaded the bases with three straight walks to kick off game two, with Thompson, Johnson and Kloft reaching base. After a Rose strikeout, Melanson then stepped up to the plate and blew the game wide open. She cleared the bases with a three-run double to left field as the first-year doubled her season RBI total with one swing of the bat. That made it 3-0 Saints. Melanson then advanced to third base on a wild pitch and
Sofia Camillieri scored her with an RBI sacrifice fly to give SLU their fourth run before the inning ended.
After one Tiger run in the bottom of the first, the Saints went back to work in the second inning.
Caelen Jahnle got hit by a pitch in the leadoff spot, giving St. Lawrence a baserunner. Then Thompson reached again, this time getting on base via an error by the second baseman.
The Tigers then walked two straight batters, with Kloft getting an RBI on the second walk, and it was 5-1. Rose then contributed with a sacrifice fly to bring in a sixth Saints run. Following an RIT pitching change, Berryhill singled to left-center with the bases still loaded, which scored Johnson to make it 7-1.
The third inning saw two more runs cross the plate for St. Lawrence off an error to make the score 9-1, and it would stay that way heading to the fourth.
In the top of the fourth, the Saints continued to get the leadoff hitter aboard – and it came in the form of a triple to right-center field by Camillieri. She was then driven home by Jahnle, who tapped a ball through the left side of the RIT infield to bring Camillieri around. Kloft then added another RBI later in the inning to score the final run of the game before it ended in the fifth via the eight-run rule.
After allowing one earned run in the first inning, Berryhill shut the door on RIT for the remainder of the contest. She posted her second consecutive complete-game outing, going a full five innings, allowing just one earned run, three hits, walking one and striking out four.
Offensively, all but two Saints had RBI. First-year Kloft took the team lead in batting average, as she now hits .382 on the season after another 1-for-1 game, driving in two runs and walking twice. Johnson worked three walks, while also scoring two runs.
Caelen Jahnle went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
