Game Recap: Baseball |

Federico and Gannon Get Off to Hot Starts; Baseball Splits With Purchase

Sophomore slugger John Gannon drove in three runs with a pinch-hit home run in game two and went 2-for-3 on the day, while senior outfielder Brett Federico had a 4-for-6 day from the plate with a double, two triples, a run scored, and an RBI to lead the St. Lawrence University baseball team to an opening day split against SUNY Purchase on Saturday in Purchase, N.Y.

Michael Hutchins pitched four innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts in his start in game one, while Michael Watson spun three innings on the bump in game two striking out three. Brenden O'Neil earned the win in game two for the Saints pitching the final three innings and striking out three batters.

St. Lawrence went to 1-1 on the young season, while Purchase saw their record go to 3-2.

"We learned a lot about our preparation today as both games were tight down to the last out," said head coach Kenny Collins "It was crucial for us to get a couple of games in before our Florida trip this year, as our schedule is not easing up. I'm proud of our effort and ability to bounce back in Game Two."
Game 1: St. Lawrence 3, SUNY Purchase 4

Hutchins, who assumed the Saints' number-one starter role this season, started his season off hot with three strikeouts in his first inning of work in the start.

St. Lawrence's offense rewarded the hurler with some early run support putting a run across the plate in the top of the second and third.

In the second, a hit by pitch, walk, and wild pitch put Jackson Brinker on third base and Max Cloutier on second. A failed pickoff attempt by the Purchase pitcher sent Brinker home for the 1-0 lead. In the third, Sean Desjardins opened the half-inning with a leadoff triple to get things started. Federico was walked later in the inning on a wild pitch sending the third basemen home for the 2-0 lead.

Relieving Hutchins on the slab was Sam Fosberg, who set the bottom of the fifth down in order, followed by Joshua Polumbo, who gave up two hits but stopped the bleeding before any runs could cross the plate.

The Saints scored again in the top of the seventh on another wild pitch. Cloutier opened the affair with a double, chasing the Purchase pitcher. Owen McClintock advanced Cloutier to third with a ground out putting the sophomore Cloutier in position to score on a two-out wild pitch.

St. Lawrence would get in trouble in the bottom of the seventh after a walk, and single gave way to a three-run home run with one out in the half-inning. Purchase would load the bases and have the game-winning run walked home to take the win.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 7, SUNY Purchase 5

In game two, Watson pitched effectively in the first two innings to keep the game scoreless before the Saints got two runs in the third.

A leadoff walk to John Donnellan would spiral for the home team as Stephen Colangelo sacrifice bunted the sophomore into scoring position. A fly-out put the inning to two outs, but the Scarlet and Brown scored off an error by the second basemen to get on the board. From there, Federico blasted a triple to the center field wall scoring Timothy Connor and doubling the early lead.

Purchase would strike back in the bottom of the fourth scoring on a wild pitch, a double, and a ground out to take a 3-2 lead.

The game cruised to the top of the sixth where St. Lawrence regained the lead. Federico, who was red-hot on the day, provided a leadoff double and came around to score when Willie Landman reached based on a throwing error. Cloutier drove in Mike DiStefano, who was in as a pinch runner, with a single down the right field line to reclaim the lead.

The seesaw affair was busted open in the seventh with a big blast from a pinch-hitter. Colangelo was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was advanced on a walk to Desjardins. With two outs away, Gannon was called in to pinch hit and did not disappoint. The promising slugger hit a moonshot three-run home run to straight-away center field to break the game open and make it 7-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, St. Lawrence gave up a leadoff single and a walk early in the inning en route to two runs, but O'Neil settled in to slam the door on the 7-5 win.
Next up: The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action next Saturday when the team heads to Florida for Spring Break. St. Lawrence opens the eight-game trip with a doubleheader against SUNY Brockport on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
