Margaret Dougher had 14 points off the bench as the Saints women's basketball team won 54-41 in a non-conference matchup over SUNY Poly Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton, N.Y.
With the win, the Saints move to 11-10 on the season. The Scarlet and Brown have now won six of their last seven and are above .500 for the first time this year.
"After two close wins on the road we looked spent today," said Saints head coach
Dan Roiger after the game. "We were flat and when we missed eleven straight shots we lost all energy. We settled for open shots instead of good shots, so we just couldn't get any consistent scoring going. Our defense was solid and after a poor first half on the glass, we got it done in the second half. We will need to play much better on the road this weekend."
The Saints never trailed in the contest, as they opened up a double-digit halftime lead with a score of 27-17. They held the Wildcats to shooting 20 per cent from the field while
Cam Roberts and
Elizabeth Flynn each had six points at the break.
The Scarlet and Brown then showcased their depth in the second half. The third quarter saw the Saints score 17 points, with 12 of these coming from bench players
Margaret Dougher and
Kristen Varin. A three-pointer by Dougher with 5:13 left in the fourth quarter put the Saints up 54-34 to seal the victory.
Dougher was the leading scorer on the night going 4-8 from the three-point arc en route to a 14-point performance. Varin chipped in eight points and three assists, while
Elizabeth Flynn hauled in 13 rebounds to go along with eight points.
The Saints had a 21-9 edge on second-chance points over the Wildcats as well as getting 31 points from their bench.
The Saints will play Ithaca (17-4, 11-3) on Friday to begin their last road trip of the regular season and then travel to Schenectady to face Union (7-14, 6-8) Saturday. Ithaca (17-4, 11-3) edged the Saints in Canton earlier this year by a score of 64-59. The Saints defeated Union 71-53.
