Aidan Macaulay matched his career high production, dropping 21 points Saturday afternoon at Hobart, but it wasn't enough for the Saints to beat the Statesmen as they fell 62-59.
It was just the second time this season the Saints have lost back-to-back games, after dropping three in a row between Nov. 18-Dec. 1. It's the first time this year they've lost two conference games in a row.
Head coach
Chris Downs says the way St. Lawrence responds to the setback is in their control.
"We have talked all year about handling hard things effectively; dealing with adversity," he said. "Adversity arrived this weekend. We now have to decide how we are going to handle it. We have to remember that everything we want is still ahead of us."
The teams began the game tied early, but Hobart took a 6-4 lead at 16:38 of the first and wouldn't relinquish it from that point on. They used the first half to build up a 12-point lead at 31-19. The Saints narrowed the gap on the scoreboard before the end of the half, scoring six in a row. They went to the locker room down 31-25.
After the Saints earned the first points of the second half, Hobart responded with a 7-0 run to widen the gap. They built their lead up to 15 with nine minutes to go, providing themselves some insurance – which they ultimately would need. From that nine minute mark, the Saints added 23 points to Hobart's 11, making it a close game late, but they would fall by three points.
Macaulay's 21 points led St. Lawrence in the game, but two other Saints also ventured into double-digit points.
Adam Dudzinski and
Gavin Macaulay each had 12. Hobart's depth burned the Saints, as the Statesmen received 22 of their points off the bench to St. Lawrence's seven.
St. Lawrence stays on the road for their next games, heading to Ithaca and Union next weekend as they wrap up their away conference schedule before heading home for the season finale.
