Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Joey Roiger

Saints Secure Home Playoff Game With Senior Day Victory

Caelan McHarney had a career-high 15 points as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team beat the RPI Engineers 65-51 on senior day in Canton, N.Y.

With the win, the Saints stayed over .500 and finished the regular season 10-8 in Liberty League play.

"It was a very good effort and focus today and we had strong contributions from our seniors in the senior game," said Dan Roiger, the Saints' head coach. "Katie had a great first quarter to jump start us and Shannon's triple just before half time gave us some momentum before the break. We found an excellent defensive group in the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth and they had a 12-0 run spurred on by some great defense that essentially put the game away."

They are tied with Union and own the tiebreaker over the Garnet Chargers, meaning St. Lawrence is fourth in the league with Union fifth. The Saints will host the Garnet Chargers Tuesday in the Liberty League's first round.

Coach Roiger says Union presents a challenge for his group.

"Union will be tough. They are an excellent defensive team and a nightmare match-up for us. They dominated us in the last game and we are going to need a better plan and better execution of that plan to compete with them."

The first half was marked with see-saw action. The Saints had a constant but small lead, never leading by more than seven. St. Lawrence had a 32-26 lead going into the locker room. Elizabeth Flynn and Katie Chisholm both had seven points to pace the Saints at the half.

The beginning of the second half was much of the same as the first, with the Saints holding the lead but never getting a large run going in the first few minutes. With 3:51 left in the third, St. Lawrence held a 39-35 lead.

For the next 10 minutes, the Scarlet and Brown went on an extended 22-6 run. The run carried over late into the fourth quarter where the Saints found themselves leading comfortably, 63-39 at the 3:10 mark in the fourth. McHarney had 13 points in this span.

McHarney was the leading scorer on the night, mustering 15 points in 18 minutes, with 13 of those points coming in the second half. Mason Baker-Schlendering also had seven points to go along with a team high eight rebounds.

Shannon Rhone and Katie Chisholm, who both got the start on senior night, contributed five assists and seven points respectively. The Saints had 16 assists on 22 made field goals.

The Liberty League playoffs are next on the schedule for the Saints, as they will host Union on Tuesday in a win-or-go-home game.
