Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Wilson Scores Two; Nordström, No. 8 Saints Shutout Union

Kennedy Wilson tallied a pair of goals and Emma-Sofie Nordström made 24 saves to lead the eighth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-0 shutout win over Union on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.

With the win, the Saints improved to 8-4-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in ECAC play, while Union fell to 5-9-0 and 3-3-0.

Both teams saw a couple of solid chances in the first, but the Garnet Chargers got the better of the play and outshot the Saints 10-5 in the opening 20 minutes.

Wilson struck first for the Saints, just two minutes and 43 seconds into the second period, as she circled the net and spun around and hit Union goaltender Sophie Matsoukas's arm and banked one in for the 1-0 lead. Hillary Sterling and Sarah Marchand assisted on the play.

After the second period, the Saints led 1-0, but Union held onto an 18-15 edge in shots on goal.

At 12:45 of the second, Abby Hustler tallied her second of the weekend, with a wrister from the left circle. Claire Tyo launched the puck from the Saints zone and found Hustler waiting at the blue line to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.

Wilson scored her second of the night with an empty net to seal the win. Both Tyo and Katina Duscio came up with a huge block, allowing Wilson to scoop up the puck and fire a long-range shot down ice for the empty net tally.

"It took us a bit to get going today after the energy and effort put forth last night," said head coach Chris Wells. "Union out worked us and out played us for the better part of two periods."

"We were able to get some momentum in the third and some good chances followed. We found a way to win today and that will go a long way moving forward."

Nordström stopped all 24 shots she faced for her third shutout of the season and 10th career shutout. Matsoukas finished with 22 saves for Union.

St. Lawrence finished with a 25-24 edge in shots on goal and ended up outshooting Union 42-36.

With few penalties on Saturday, both teams finished 0-for-1 on the power play.

The Saints will host Route 11 rival Clarkson for their first of four meetings on the year this in non-conference action Wednesday, November 13. Wednesday's game is a school day game and puck drop is scheduled for 11 a.m.
