Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cristall Scores in Hard-Fought 2-1 Loss Versus No. 10 Providence

Junior forward Tyler Cristall scored his second goal of the season in the second period to tie the game. However, a third-period tally from the Friars sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 2-1 loss on Saturday night against No. 10 Providence in the Adirondack Winter Invitational at the Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y.

St. Lawrence fell to 4-11-0 with the result, while the Friars improved to 10-3-2.

The game got off to a slow start with both teams feeling each other out. Dominic Basse and Zachary Borgiel each had to fend off some early chances, but neither team had any quality scoring chances.

The Friars ended up on the board first, scoring l three minutes and 21 seconds into the game. Following a questionable no-call, John Mustard found himself with puck and fanned on his attempt. The shot however turned into a great pass as the puck landed on the stick of Tanner Adams, who made it 1-0.

Basse kept the score at 1-0 with a big-time save seven minutes in. After the play turned up the ice, the Saints ended up with a power play. Felikss Gavars nearly tied the game in the first half of the man advantage with a one-timer from the circle but the shot sailed just high.

The play was evened following the power play as the Saints were flagged for an infraction. Despite a couple of good chances, Basse and St. Lawrence's No. 4-ranked penalty kill prevailed.

The Scarlet and Brown once again nearly tied the game later in the period when Cristall made a diving catch on a Jan Olenginski pass. The junior entered the zone and skipped a pass to Gunnar Thoreson, who hit the crossbar to keep the game at 1-0.

St. Lawrence capitalized on the momentum early in the third as they scored less than three minutes into the second period. Tomáš Mazura and Thoreson were causing havoc and caused a turnover that found Cristall. The junior gathered and fired through Thoreson's screen and in to tie up the contest.

That line produced another great shift minutes later as the Saints continued to build their attack. With 13:46 on the clock, Greg Lapointe nearly gave the Scarlet and Brown the lead but his deflection off of a Philippe Chapleau shot was barely stopped.

St. Lawrence went on the power play after that and continued to press the net. Drake Burgin, Jan Lasak, and others got great chances toward the net mouth, but the game remained tied.

Basse and the defense stood tall in the second half of the period stopping a pair of threatening looks from Providence.

The Saints ended the second on a man advantage and proceeded to attack. Chapleau and Lasak had the opening chances and were followed by an impressive deflection in front of Borgiel that was barely stopped.

St. Lawrence began the period with the remainder of their power play but they couldn't get much going in the 30 seconds. Instead, Providence would claim the momentum and press the net.

Basse and the Saints answered the bell but a turnover in the Saints' end turned into a Friar lead. The puck was turned over to Providence and Mustard capitalized for the 2-1 edge.

The Scarlet and Brown went on the power play with under ten minutes to go and got some early chances from Reilly Connors. The chance was short-lived however as the Saints were flagged with a penalty 14 seconds into the power play to make it four-on-four.

Providence would go on another penalty kill and it looked as if they made it a 3-1 game, but the goal was challenged and disallowed.

The Saints had two 2-on-1 chances on the kill with Connors and Gavars getting stopped on their shots. St. Lawrence pulled their goalie in the final minute but could not find an equalizer.

Basse stopped 33 shots for the Saints while Borgiel made 19 in the opposing goal.

Both teams went without a goal in special teams and the Saints killed off three Friar chances.

The Scarlet and Brown will be in action next Friday, December 6 when the team heads to Hanover, N.H. for a game against the Dartmouth Big Green.
