Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey Drops 2-1 Game to Brown in Overtime; Lasak Scores His First of the Season

Junior forward Jan Lasak scored his first goal of the season to tie the game in the third period, but the game went to overtime where the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 2-1 to Brown on Saturday night at Appleton Arena.

With the result, St. Lawrence fell to 4-9-0 on the year and 0-4-0 in ECAC play, while the Bears improved to 2-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league action.

The first period belonged to the Saints, who outshot the opposition 11-4. Lawton Zacher had to be sharp early as Gabe Westling, Felikss Gavars, Tomáš Mazura, and Jacob Bernadet pressed his net with shots.

After killing off an early penalty, the Saints went to work on a power play of their own late in the frame but came up empty as the game went to the intermission at 0-0 where the game started.

The 0-0 game didn't last late into the second as Brown scored a minute and 29 seconds into the middle period. A turnover at the offensive blueline ended up on the stick of Charlie Gollob, who went in on a breakaway and scored to give the Bears the lead.

St. Lawrence had a power play chance shortly after the goal and a second penalty put them on the 5-on-3. Despite heavy pressure, the Saints once again were unable to solve Zacher.

The Saints continued to battle and made 13 shot attempts in the final 4:08 of the period, but they had to settle for a 1-0 score at the break.

The Scarlet and Brown's persistence finally paid off in the third when they tied the game at the 6:32 mark. The first-year Westling head manned the puck up the right wing and dropped it back to Ty Naaykens. The senior captain wired a pass back to the middle of the ice where Lasak one-timed the puck home to tie the contest.

The goal jumpstarted the Saints and nearly took the lead on the next shift, but Isaac Tremblay and Drake Burgin had their dangerous looks stymied.

Moments later, St. Lawrence went back on the power play after a hard hit from behind that wound up being a two-minute advantage. Senior captain Mason Waite was in attack mode getting three shots off on the advantage and after hitting the post the game remained tied.

Both squads traded chances the rest of the way, but the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, Brown won the initial faceoff and proceeded to rag the puck for the first minute or so. The strategy paid off as Ethan Mistry carried the puck out of the offensive end and fed Brian Nicholas with a breakaway pass. The Bears forward scored to give Brown the extra league point and the win.

Dominic Basse made 23 saves for the Scarlet and Brown in his first home game as a Saint, while Zacher made 30 saves in the visiting goal.

St. Lawrence held the 31-25 shot advantage in the contest and both teams would come up empty on the power play.

The Saints will be back in action next weekend when the team heads to Lake Placid, N.Y. for the Adirondack Invitational. St. Lawrence will play UMass Lowell at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 29, then will take on Providence the next day in a 4 p.m. game.
