Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Kucenski Stops 26 in Men's Hockey's 1-0 Loss Versus Ferris State

Sophomore Mason Kucenski stopped 26 shots in goal for the Saints, but they were unable to get him any offense as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 1-0 to Ferris State on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

St. Lawrence fell to 3-2-0 on the year, while the Bulldogs went to 1-2-2.

The game was a fast and physical one to start and the Saints got the first five of the first six shots. Jan Olenginski had two shots on goal and was joined by Drake Burgin, but Noah West came up with all three stops. Felikss Gavars had the best chance of the period however, but he saw his shot ring off the post keeping the game square.

Mason Kucenski was just as sharp in the Saints' goal in the first period making seven saves.

St. Lawrence had a chance to take a lead late in the first when the Bulldogs were given an interference penalty, but shots from Tomáš Mazura, Mason Waite, and Philippe Chapleau were all stopped as the game went to 0-0 at intermission.

The power play ended eight seconds into the second period and the Bulldogs struck soon after. Less than a minute into the middle frame, Nico Devita came up with a turnover and pushed it up ice. Caiden Gault brought the puck in and beat Kucenski to give Ferris the lead.

For the second straight period, the Scarlet and Brown were able to produce 12 shots on goal, but they were unable to get one past West.

St. Lawrence turned up the heat in the back half of the third period peppering the Bulldog goal with six shots in a little over two minutes.

The Saints would lose their timeout challenging a missed kneeing penalty but would continue to look for an equalizer with an extra attacker with three minutes to go.

While on 6-on-5, Greg Lapointe, Nicholas Beneteau, Waite, and Naaykens were all able to get quality looks at the net but were unable to find twine as the clock hit zeroes.

Kucenski came up with 26 saves in the Saint goal, while West made 35 saves in the other net.

St. Lawrence outshot Ferris State 35-27 in the game and neither team was able to score on the power play. The Saints had just two chances on the night despite the opportunity for more, while the Bulldogs have yet to score on the power play this season after going 0-for-1.

The two teams will line up again tomorrow night at Appleton Arena starting at 7 p.m.
