Junior forward
Tyler Cristall was able to score a power play goal in the first to tie the game, but two goals from the Irish in the second helped send the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 4-1 loss to No. 18/20 Notre Dame on Friday night in Appleton Arena.
The Saints went to 2-1-0 on the young season, while the Irish went to 1-0-0.
St. Lawrence came out strong getting three of the first four shots off, but the Fighting Irish would find the scoreboard first. Blake Biondi cashed in off assists from Michael Mastrodomenico and Ryan Helliwell to take the 1-0 lead.
Not long after the goal, the Scarlet and Brown responded cashing in on the power play. Tomáš Mazura gathered the puck on the right wing on a zone entry and found senior captain
Philippe Chapleau at the blue line. The defender sent a shot pass in towards Cristall, who redirected the puck home to tie the game up at 1-1.
Both teams had scattered chances the rest of the way, but the game was 1-1 after 20 minutes.
The game stayed that way for the first 11 minutes of the second period until a turnover caused by Cole Knuble ended with the forward scoring to give Notre Dame the 2-1 lead.
Later in the period, the Irish cashed in on their own power play as Danny Nelson found twine to make it 3-1 going into the third.
St. Lawrence did well to outshoot Notre Dame in the third period getting 18 shots to goal as they searched for a goal to cut the deficit.
Instead, it became a three-goal game after a second goal from Knuble helped put the game out of reach.
Mason Kucenski stopped a season-high 35 shots in the contest, while Notre Dame's Owen Say made 32 stops.
Both teams struck on the power play with the Saints going 1-for-2, and the Irish going 1-for-3.
The Skating Saints will be back at Appleton Arena tomorrow as the team hosts Niagara in a 7 p.m. start.
