Sharp attention on the defensive end allowed the Saints to hold the visiting Raptors to a field goal percentage of just 23 per cent in a Liberty League matchup Friday evening at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton, N.Y. 16 different players saw minutes for St. Lawrence in the 68-40 victory.
"Very proud of the team effort we had tonight," said Dan Roiger the Saints head coach. "We had people up and down the lineup make good contributions and keep the pressure on all night long. We executed very well on defense and gained a lot of confidence in our shooting with good ball movement. Having 22 assists on 24 buckets is excellent and a testimony to the work the girls have been putting in to get better individually and play better team basketball."
Bard would find themselves up 7-6 just over three minutes into the game before two free-throws by Elizabeth Flynn would give St. Lawrence a lead that they would hold for the rest of the evening. A 6-2 run to end the first followed by a 17-11 run in the second would see the lead Saints lead blossom to 14 points at the half.
Starting the third on a 12-0 run behind two three-pointers from Norah Niesz saw the lead grow to 26 before the Raptors were able to break through the solid St. Lawrence defense. A 25-4 third quarter resulted in a 35-point lead for the Saints, their largest of game, and put the contest firmly out of reach.
Niesz was the lone Saint to reach double-digit scoring with 12, in a very balanced offensive performance. Elizabeth Flynn grabbed eight boards to go along with seven points while Katie Chisholm and Mason Baker-Schlendering added nine and eight points, respectively, off the bench.
St. Lawrence dominated in bench points 37-8 and outscored Bard 22-10 in the paint enroute to the win. After their third-straight win the Saints find themselves at fourth in the league headed into the final month of league play.
The Scarlet and Brown return to action in another Liberty League challenge Saturday afternoon against Vassar College. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
