The St. Lawrence Saints field hockey team opened their season with a 2-0 loss at the hands of the SUNY New Paltz Hawks, Friday afternoon in New Paltz, N.Y.
Â
The Saints fired six shots on target over the course of the afternoon season opener, but weren't able to solve Hawks' keeper Gail Comiskey. The Patchogue, N.Y. native was perfect between the posts for the Hawks, stopping all six shots she faced.
Â
It was a balanced offensive effort for St. Lawrence, who began the game with a 3-1 shot advantage after a scoreless first quarter –
Sydney LeClair, Maggie Spire,
Caroline Hamilton,
Suzanne L'Hommedieu,
Kara Dominick,
Mayson Blondek each had a shot on target in the losing effort.
Â
The Hawks fired 21 shots on target and their offensive efforts paid off in spades later on in the contest. After the Saints held them off through some strong goalkeeping from
Lucy Adiutori, the Hawks broke the scoreless draw in the third quarter.
"Lucy had a phenomenal game," said head coachÂ
Fran Grembowicz. "We opened with a strong first quarter and will be looking to put together four strong quarters tomorrow."
With assistance from Meghan Gunning, Amanda Quenneville opened the Hawks' 2023 season scoring at 42:54 to make it 1-0 New Paltz. The Hawks then added some insurance just over four minutes later, when Gunning notched a goal of her own at 46:58 to make it 2-0 Hawks.
Â
New Paltz then held off the Saints for the remainder of the contest, preserving the shutout victory.
Grembowicz's side will look to register their first win of the 2023 season when they re-take the field later this weekend. They face SUNY Oneonta Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in New Paltz, N.Y.
