The St. Lawrence University men's golf team will open up the fall portion of the 2023-24 season with the St. Lawrence Invitational under second-year head coach
Tyler Wollberg at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course this Saturday and Sunday.
The Saints will compete against Oswego, St. John Fisher, Clarkson, SUNY Canton, and Paul Smiths.
"This team is going to be a team that sets a new standard for SLU Golf," said Wollberg. "We are returning the top five players in our lineup and the rest of the team has gotten drastically better."
"Last season we finished third at the Liberty League Championship and one shot out of second place," Wollberg added. "RPI got us by 11 shots at Liberty League and ended up finishing eighth at the NCAA's. With all that being said, this team is riding high in confidence, and we feel we're the team to beat in our conference.
Cooper Evans and
Wes Bevins are returning seniors from the top five and I'm confident they will be great contributors this season.
Sam Lyman and
Ben Scholes had solid sophomore seasons and I know they have worked on their mental games immensely this summer. It's also nice to have a now sophomore,
Jimmy King, who earned Liberty League Rookie of the Year honors was selected to the GCAA National All-Freshman Team last season returning to the team. You should also look for great play from
Ben Lloyd,
Aidan Daly,
Owen Donovan, and
Alex Reith and a few others as well. We have two first-years,
Gabe Ward and
Siadhal Sweeney, who will be great contributors to the team. This is a great group of individuals who will do something special this year, I can't wait to see what they accomplish!"
King, who was named Liberty League Rookie of the Year and earned GCAA National All-Freshman Team honors, recorded a stroke average of 75.41 over 19 rounds and posted one individual win, four top-five finishes and tied for sixth place at Liberty Leagues with a 69-78-72-219 on the weekend to close out his first season in Scarlet and Brown.
In 2022-23, the Saints' season started on the right foot as King claimed the individual title at the St. Lawrence University Invitational and the team claimed the team title, as Scholes placed second with a 149, Bevins tied for fifth with a 155, Evans tied for eighth with a 156 and Lyman tied for 21st with a 164.
St. Lawrence added three other first-place finishes during the fall portion of the schedule with a win against Clarkson, SUNY Canton and the Nazareth Invitationals. The Saints also played at the Duke Nelson and Williams College Invitational and added a third-place finish at the Liberty League Fall Preview.
To close out the fall, Lyman picked up a first-place individual title at shooting a combined 148 on the weekend. King placed second in the tournament with a 151, while Bevins tied for third with a 153 and Scholes placed fifth with a 155.
In the spring, the Saints played at the Tim Brown Invitational, bested Clarkson in a Sunday dual match and went to the Farmingdale State Invitational before wrapping up the season at the Liberty League Championships at the Turning Stone's Shenendoah Course.
Joining the roster this season are first-years

The Saints junior class is made up of
