Murphy Scores Five, Hutchinson Adds Four; No. 8 Saints Top Skidmore

Judge Murphy tallied five goals and Ben Hutchinson added another four, as the No. 8 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team defeated Skidmore 13-8 in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon in Canton, New York.

Cody Sipher added a pair of goals, while Zadoc White and Cam Croasdaile each scored once, and Mark Mahoney added two assists. Ben Hutchinson also recorded three ground balls and one caused turnover, while Saints' goaltender Michael Marinello picked up two ground balls and Tripp Clark caused four turnovers.

After a slow start, the Thoroughbreds scored the first two goals of the game off the sticks of Nicolo Mazzocca and Charlie McFadden. White tallied the lone goal for the Saints in the first quarter with nine seconds remaining for his sixth of the season.

The Saints fired back in the second quarter, outscoring Skidmore 3-1 to take a 4-3 lead at halftime.

With the Thoroughbreds called for a penalty right before the second quarter expired, the Saints entered the third quarter on a man-up advantage. Ben Hutchinson scored his 29th of the season on the man-up to lead 5-3.

After a goal from Murphy, the team's traded goals and the Saints led 9-6 heading into the final quarter.

Max Heberlin scored for Skidmore to bring the game back within two, but two straight goals from Murphy and Croasdaile, increased the Saints lead to 11-7. Murphy and Ben Hutchinson capped the scoring for the Scarlet and Brown's fourth straight win.

"I thought that was a good effort at home today," said head coach Mike Mahoney. "We were able to solve their goalie in the second half and we played solid defense throughout."

"We were privileged to support Morgan's Message, to emphasize the importance of doing all we can to destigmatize the conversations about mental health."

McFadden finished with two goals and an assist for the Thoroughbreds, while Caleb Lawson also scored twice. Three different members of the Skidmore squad each picked up two ground balls.

Marinello made 12 saves for the Saints, while Skidmore's Collin Kuester finished with 19.

St. Lawrence outshot Skidmore 46-37, including a 32-20 advantage in shots on goal. The Scarlet and Brown also capitalized on all three of their man-up opportunities, while the Thoroughbreds finished 1-for-3. The Saints finished with 31 ground balls, to Skidmore's 20.

The Saints improved to 10-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while Skidmore fell to 7-4 and 1-2, respectively.
