Donnellan Hits Walk-Off Double In Game Two To Earn Doubleheader Split With Hobart

First-year catcher John Donnellan came up clutch for the Saints roping an RBI-double over the Statesmen outfielders and to the wall in game two to give the St. Lawrence University baseball team a walk off 5-4 win against Hobart College after falling 4-3 in game one.

St. Lawrence went to 6-8 on the season and 1-4 in Liberty League with the twin bill split. Hobart moved to 4-13 on the season and 1-7 in conference action.

Brett Federico ran hot from the leadoff spot in both games going 5-for-8 scoring three runs and driving in an RBI. Caleb Clark was only able to generate one hit from the plate, but was able to earn three RBI in the double header.

"Today we competed well in two tight games," said head coach Kenny Collins "Hobart is a team that really plays the game hard and makes you earn everything. We feel like our bats are starting to come alive and our pitchers did a great job of keeping us in both games today. Tomorrow will be a good test of how we handle an opportunity to win our first series."

Game 1: St. Lawrence 3, Hobart 4 (9 Innings)

The Scarlet and Brown offense started hot in game one loading the bases with a Federico single, Jackson Brinker double, and a Jimmy Liberatore walk. Despite the one-out threat, the Saints were unable to get a run across the plate.

St. Lawrence would leave two more runners on base in the second as Tynan Creagh and Federico each reached on two-out singles before a fielder's choice ended the threat.

Hobart would work their way into a bases loaded situation themselves in the top of the third after a leadoff double, followed by a walk, and a hit by pitch. Michael Hutchins would strike out the next batter and with two outs forced a fly out to center field to work out of the jam.

The Statesmen ended up breaking the tie in the top of the fifth when Tyler Gallagher hit a three-tun home run to right field to put Hobart up 3-0. They would add to their lead later in the seventh scoring a run off of an error to take a 4-0 lead.

The Saints would start to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh with two bases runners reaching on back-to-back errors. A Brinker walk would load the bases with no outs away. Clark brought the first run of the inning home for St. Lawrence with a fielder's choice. After a pitching change, back-to-back singles from Timothy Connor and Michael Goretti would bring the score to 4-3.

The Scarlet and Brown were unable to complete their comeback in their final two times up to bat.

Hutchins started on the hill for St. Lawrence pitching 5 and two-thirds innings giving up three runs on three hits and struck out four batters. Brenden O'Neil came on in relief pitching the final 3 and one-thirds innings giving up just two hits, no unearned runs, and also struck out four batters.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 5, Hobart 4 (7 Innings)

St. Lawrence once again got their offense going in the first inning, but this time was able to get a run across. Federico started with a leadoff single and stole second base. Brinker and Clark would hit consecutive groundouts that brought Federico around to score.

The Saints doubled their lead to 2-0 in the second inning when Connor smoked a leadoff home run over the right-center field wall of Tom Fay Field.

Hobart responded in the next half-inning with three runs to take the lead. Gallagher drove the first two runs in with a single to right field before Pinto singled home Gallagher with two-outs down to make it 3-2.

The Scarlet and Brown would regain the lead in the bottom of the third. A Stephen Colangelo stand-up double came home to score when a Brett Federico bunt single got away from the first baseman allowing Colangelo to score. The lead was taken back later in the inning when Clark hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Federico.

The Statesmen again answered as they tied the game with a double in the top of the fourth. Both teams would threaten in the next few passes, but nothing came to fruition.

The game rolled into the bottom of the seventh where Huck Haun started the inning with a single to right field. Haun was brought home shortly after as Donnellan scorched a fastball over the Hobart outfielders for a game-winning double.

Senior ace Jack Sylvia went to 2-0 on the season after pitching a complete game in game two. The hurler pitched seven innings giving up two earned runs on five hits and fanned six batters along the way.

The two teams will decide the series in game three tomorrow at Tom Fay Field with game time set for 12:00 noon.
