Powell Lifts Saints to 11-10 Win Over RIT; St. Lawrence Hosts Vassar in First Round

Charlotte Powell scored the go-ahead goal with 6:52 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 11-10 win over RIT in the regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, N.Y.

With the win, the Saints improved to 9-6 overall and 7-3 in league play, while RIT fell to 4-10 and 3-7.

Jacqui Cloutier led the Scarlet and Brown with four goals, six ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Powell finished with a hat trick, two draw control wins, one caused turnover and one ground balls. Dana Fernandez, Bella Hillman, Rachel Burke and Neve Ley also scored for the Saints. Burke and Fernandez each picked up three ground balls, while Kelsey O'Brien caused four turnovers.

A back-and-forth battle from the beginning, both teams tallied four goals in the first and two goals in the second and were deadlocked 5-5 at halftime.

The Tigers scored the first two of the third quarter to lead 7-5, but goals from Ley and Hillman put the Saints right back in it. St. Lawrence held a slight edge in the third, outscoring the Tigers 4-3, heading into the final quarter.

The game continued to be a tight battle for the lead, as the game remained tied 10-10 with 8:54 remaining.

Powell scored the game-winning goal for the Scarlet and Brown with 6:52 to play giving the Saints the final 11-10 edge and the regular-season finale win.

Zoe Heffernan led the Tigers with three goals, three assists, three ground balls and one draw control win.

Raelynn Bovenzi made seven saves between the pipes for the Saints, while Michelle Messenger made 14 for the Tigers.

St. Lawrence outshot RIT 31-25, including 25-17 in shots on goal. The Saints also picked up 26 ground balls to RIT's 22, but the Tigers controlled the draws with a 16-9 advantage.

The Saints will be back on action on Tuesday to host Vassar in the first round of the Liberty League tournament. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
