Game Recap: Baseball |

Saints Baseball Sweeps Union Twin Bill With 2-1 and 8-5 Wins

Sophomore first baseman Timothy Connor went 3-for-7 on the day with four RBI two runs and a home run, while senior teammate Huck Haun hit a clutch walk off single in game one to help the St. Lawrence university baseball team to a 2-1, 8-5 twin bill sweep over Union College on Wednesday afternoon in Davenport, Florida at the Russmatt Invitaional.

The Scarlet and Brown improved to 4-3 on the year, while the Dutchmen fell to 3-3.

Senior ace Jack Sylvia earned the win in game one as he shut down Union in the top of the seventh before the walk off single. First-year JJ Humenay earned his first career win in game two, while Brett Parker got the save on the hill.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 2, Union 1 (seven innings)

Union posed the only credible offensive threat in the first few innings as they hit back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on. Both runners would advance on a failed pick off before a strikeout and a walk to load the bases. The Saints defense would provide a force out to escape the inning.

The game rolled along into the bottom of the fourth where we saw the game's first run. Jimmy Liberatore slashed a one-out triple to put the Scarlet and Brown in a scoring situation. Connor would take advantage as he smacked a single to left field to score Liberatore.

Union would tie the contest in the next half-inning as the Dutchmen had two aboard with one out after an error, a sacrifice bunt and a walk. Union would pinch hit Milone, who singled to score a run. The Saints would bare down on defense forcing a groundout and fly out to end the threat.

The game once again would go two innings without much offense. That was until the bottom of the seventh when the Scarlet and Brown would take the game. Liberatore started the inning by reaching on an error. Tynan Creagh would pinch run and the rookie advanced to second on a balk, and eventually third when Connor reached on an error himself. Connor would swipe second before Huck Haun, who came in to pinch hit, singled home Creagh to walk off with the win for the Saints.

Michael Watson started on the bump for St. Lawrence and pitched two innings of three hit, two strikeout and no run ball. Sam Fosberg would relieve Watson and pitch three innings striking out two and giving up a run. Joshua Polumbo and Sylvia, who earned the win, would each pitch an inning to end the contest with a strikeout each.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 8, Union 5 (seven innings)

St. Lawrence used their momentum from game one to jump out to a 6-0 lead over the Dutchmen.

In the top of the second, Connor broke the scoring with a light tower home run to right center field to give the team the 1-0 lead. Michael Goretti would double his way aboard with one out, then with two outs Stephen Colangelo delivered a single to left field to score the fifth-year.

The onslaught began in the third when Caleb Clark scorched a one-out double to right field to put runners at second and third. Connor would deliver both runners home with a single to right field doubling the lead. Goretti would go on to drive home Connor, then would cap off the effort later in the inning as he scored on a wild pitch to bring the game to 6-0.

Union got a run back in the bottom half of the third as Milone scored on a wild pitch. The Saints got the run right back as Liberatore grounded out to the shortstop scoring Creagh in the process.

The Dutchmen got things rolling in the bottom of the four with two outs away. A walk, and a wild pitch put Union in scoring position where a single brought a run home. Milone and Mentzer then delivered back-to-back clutch hits to bring the score to 7-4.

Union scored again in the fifth as Zaslaw provided a sacrifice fly before the end of the inning.

Liberatore earned his second RBI of the game in the top of the sixth as he scorched a ball to the second baseman with runners at the corner's Colangelo would score on the play, while Liberatore got a fielder's choice.

Parker would come in to pitch in the fifth and not look back. The senior slammed the door on any comeback effort allowing just two hits, while striking out two in three innings of work earning him the save.
