Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Saints Top Hobart 73-67 in Overtime Thriller

The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team had a season-high 11 blocks to go along with eight steals in their 73-67 overtime win over the Hobart Statesmen on Friday night in Burkman Gymnasium.

Trent Adamson led the Saints with 16 points on 7-10 shooting, including clutch layups in the final minutes of regulation and overtime. Trey Syroka finished with 13 points, and Aidan Macaulay and Will Engelhardt each had a dozen.

After leading for the first nine minutes of the second half, Hobart stormed back and looked to take control of the game. They led by one or two possessions for the last seven minutes of the second half. With 30 seconds remaining Engelhardt fed Adamson on the post, who spun past his defender and laid in a bucket to tie the game at 63. The Saints' suffocating defense forced a Statesmen shot off the back of the backboard to get the stop. With three seconds to get the ball the length of the court, Syroka got a decent look from three but the shot did not fall.

After a Hobart free-throw opened overtime scoring, Aidan Macaulay hit a jumper to take the lead. After three scoreless minutes Syroka hit two free throws to extend the lead to three. The Statesmen got a tip-in layup on the next possession, and a defensive stop to set up a chance to take the lead with 30 seconds to go, but Syroka came up with his second steal of the night and pushed the ball to Gavin Macaulay, who found Adamson for the easy layup. Gavin Macaulay and Will Engelhardt each went 2-2 from the line in the final 10 seconds to seal the win 73-67.

"Nice win," said head coach Chris Downs. "Hobart is very physical and tough. Our guys will be very sore on Saturday."

Jackson Meshanic had a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double to lead the Statesmen, while his brothers Carter and Hunter each had 10 points.

Andrew Cowan had a career high four blocks, and Adamson and Aidan Macaulay each had a pair. Engelhardt and Gavin Macaulay each had three steals, while Syroka had two.

Hobart out-rebounded the Saints 40-26, but turned the ball over 18 times to the Saints' eight turnovers.

St. Lawrence improved to 12-7 on the season and 8-5 in the league for a four-way tie for third place in the Liberty League. The Statesmen fall to 12-8 and are also 8-5 in the league.

The Saints host RIT on February 4th at 4 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
