The Saints scored twice on the power play, each within eight seconds of starting, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team was ultimately overpowered losing 6-2 to the No. 7-9 Harvard Crimson on Friday night at Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence fell to 16-17-0 with the win and 11-10-0 in the ECAC, while Harvard improved to 20-6-2 and 17-4-0 in league play.
The Saints remain tied for fourth with Colgate going into the final game of their regular season with the Raiders holding the tiebreaker.
The Crimson came out swinging in the opening minutes of the contest with eight shot attempts in the opening five minutes. The Saints would withstand the barrage and push back before getting called for a too many men on the ice infraction. The penalty was killed, but later in the period St. Lawrence was nailed again for the same call. This time Harvard would make them pay as Alex Laferriere would score a power play goal with 1:20 left in the first to go up 1-0.
The 1-0 score would hold into the midway point of the second where the Crimson would double their lead. Harvard, who was on the power play once again, saw their chance end. But as the time was expiring on the penalty, Joe Miller was able to feed a pass down to Alex Gaffney, who dished a back door pass to Philip Tresca, who buried the chance to go up 2-0.
Moments later, the Scarlet and Brown would finally go on the power play and they made it count.
Max Dorrington won the draw for the Saints and the puck was played back to
Philippe Chapleau at the blueline by
Jan Lasak. The defender ushered a pass to
Ty Naaykens on the left side of the Harvard cage. The sophomore forward laced a wrist shot through a screen to cut the score to 2-1.
The Crimson would regain the lead and then some in the final minute of the second period. Harvard's Baker Shore tallied the first of the two goals with 52 seconds left, then with less than four ticks on the clock John Farinacci made the score 4-1 heading into the break.
Four minutes and two seconds into the third period, the Skating Saints would go back on the power play and would once again strike just seconds in. After a faceoff win,
Luc Salem sent a pass over to
Mason Waite, who let go a heavy slap shot. The shot was saved, but
Cameron Buhl was on the spot swatting the floating puck in with his stick to make it 4-2.
St. Lawrence would continue to push, but Harvard would regain the three-goal lead when Sean Farrell was given a penalty shot with less than five minutes to go and capitalized on the chance.
With the goalie pulled, Alex Laferriere would score the final goal to make it 6-2.
Emil Zetterquist made 18 saves in the game, while Mitchell Gibson stopped 27 of the 29 he faced.
After being outshot 10-4 in the first period, the Saints went on to hold the 29-24 lead in shots. St. Lawrence went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Harvard went 1-for-5.
The Skating Saints will be back tomorrow at Appleton for their regular season finale and before the game against Dartmouth will honor the eight members of the Class of 2023.
