Saints Earn Weekend Sweep with a Senior Day Victory Over Princeton

Shailynn Snow continued her dominant weekend with a goal and an assist on Abby Hustler's game-winning goal to power the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-1 senior day victory over the Princeton Tigers on Saturday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.

The first period saw no goals but a dominant second half of the period by the Saints.

St. Lawrence kept Princeton pinned in their defensive zone for long-stretches. During one of those shifts, Hustler hit the post on a shot from the top of the slot. Princeton goaltender Taylor Hyland was strong stopping eleven shots in the period to keep the game scoreless.

The Saints continued their dominant play into the second period. Their smothering forecheck never allowed the Tigers to sustain any momentum beyond their own blueline. SLU finally broke the scoreless action halfway through the period.

Julia Gosling sent a shot towards net that hit Hyland in the chest. She was unable to make a clean save or corral the rebound. Snow crashed the net and sent the rebound beat over the Tiger goalie's glove.

Snow shined again later in the middle frame, showing her signature grit. The senior took a stick to the face and would miss a few shifts, but in her next shift, she found her way on to the scoresheet again.

Hustler gathered the puck in the Saints' defensive zone. She sauced a pass to Snow in the neutral zone, who skated into the Tigers' end. Snow then passed Hustler, who was cutting backdoor, and she beat Hyland five-hole.

The Saints led 2-0 after two periods and were outshooting Princeton 18-13.

The Tigers regrouped in the intermission and came out with energy in the third. Five minutes in, they had a big opportunity to cut their deficit to one on their second power-play of game.

A Princeton forward carried the puck from the corner and fed her teammate backdoor, but Morgan slid off her blocker post and cut the angle of the shooter with her glove. Morgan and Saints' penalty-kill stifled the opportunity.

St. Lawrence earned their first power-play chance of the game five minutes later and looked to extend the lead, but Princeton's Maggie Connors capitalized on a power-play miscue. She skated on a breakaway and slipped the puck under Morgan's five-hole. The Saints' lead was cut to one with 8:40 to play.

The loss of momentum did not deter the Scarlet and Brown. They responded to each of Princeton's chances with their own.

Taylor Lum grabbed the puck after a Princeton turnover in the neutral zone with two minutes remaining. She outskated a back-checking Tiger and carried the puck into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1. Lum went forehand, backhand and roofed a shot below the crossbar and over Hyland's glove. The St. Lawrence bench erupted in celebration.

Lum's goal clinched the victory for the Saints in a crucial ECAC matchup.

"Lummer's goal was a perfect way to cap off a very good weekend today," said head coach Chris Wells. "We played a solid game this afternoon, and again we were on the good end of some bounces. Being able to get up by two was important heading into the third because Princeton has the ability to score in bunches."

St. Lawrence outshot Princeton 61-35 in attempts and 29-19 in shots-on-goal. Morgan finished with 18 saves on her senior day victory, while Hyland had 29 saves in the defeat.

Snow finished the weekend with three goals and two assists in front of her family, hailing all the way from Bay Roberts, Newfoundland. Snow's mother credited her performance to hearing her cowbell for the first time in three years. The senior's performance this weekend highlighted an accumulation of four years of hard work for the entire class.

"The energy in Appleton and on our bench was exactly what makes this place so fun to play in," added Wells. "Our seniors had a great weekend to remember playing their last games at home."

Today's victory marked the fiftieth for the senior class. The Scarlet and Brown improved to 16-17-3 overall and 10-9-3 in ECAC play. Princeton fell to 14-13-1 and 10-12-0 with the loss.

The Saints clinched sixth place in this winner-take-all matchup. They will head to third-seeded and #7/6 ranked Quinnipiac University Bobcats for the ECAC Quarterfinals best-of-three series. The first game is on Friday at 6:00 p.m. Game two is Saturday at 3:00 p.m., and if necessary, game three is on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
