The St. Lawrence University football team put up four touchdowns and a field goal to defeat Buffalo State 30-7 to close out the 2023 season on a chilly Saturday afternoon in Buffalo, N.Y.
Will Lederman threw 12-for-13 for 91 yards for one touchdown and ran for 51 yards and two touchdowns to lead the St. Lawrence offense, while
Cole Salyards finished with seven catches for 55 yards.
Defensively,
Joseph O'Neil and
Maxwell Kipp each finished the day with five tackles, while Benn Munn finished with four, including two for the loss of 15 yards and a sack for the loss of 10. O'Neil,
Colin Wanat and
Nicholas Giardina each tallied three pass breakups, while Kipp and
Grady Harrington each recorded an interception.
Just a little over four minutes into play, Lederman found Salyards with a 13-yard touchdown pass and
Clayton Fogler's first kick of the day was good to put the Scarlet and Brown up 7-0.
The Saints tacked on another touchdown before the end of the first quarter, as Lederman ran in for a nine-yard touchdown and Fogler's second kick was good for the 14-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes of play.
The Saints continued their run to open the second quarter, as
Daniel Lawther rushed for three yards, increasing the lead to 20-0 at 12:31.
Fogler closed out the half for the Saints with a 23-yard field goal, giving St. Lawrence a 23-0 lead at the break
Lederman scored his second touchdown of the day on the run, running in 29 yards on a 43-yard drive and Fogler's kick was good to extend the lead to 30-0.
Buffalo State spoiled the Saints shutout efforts with 1:03 to play in the fourth quarter, as Noah Kimble connected with Tariq Nelson for a 16-yard pass and the touchdown. Nick Sciandra's kick was good, making the final 30-7.
Kimble finished 16-for-39 for 187 yards, while Cody Phillips rushed for 39 and Darion Jones caught seven passes for 88 yards. Kenyon King led the Bengals defense with 11 tackles, including three for the loss of 15 and two sacks for the loss of 12.
The Saints finished with a 13-12 edge in first downs, but the Bengals finished with 243 yards of offense to St. Lawrence's 219. The Saints held possession for 34:26 over the Bengals' time of 25:34 this afternoon.
St. Lawrence ended the 2023 season 3-7 overall and 1-5 in Liberty League play, while Buffalo State finished 2-8 and 0-6, respectively.
