Two second half goals made the difference for Ithaca College, as they downed the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team 2-0, putting an end to the Saints' playoff season in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament.
St. Lawrence finishes the season at 7-7-4 overall, while Ithaca improved to 10-2-4.
"Team 43 turned the ship around this season, and we are so proud of all that they and these seniors have accomplished," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "Today was a great game and the team battled all the way to the end. Brick by brick we were a better team because of these women and what they commit to on and off the field. This mindset will continue in the off-season. Thanks to everyone for their love and support!"
St. Lawrence controlled the game's opening minutes, hanging in the Ithaca end but not generating any shots. Ithaca gained possession quickly thereafter and gave Saints' goalkeeper
Keely Snode her first tests of the game, and she answered the call by stopping three Bombers shots in 15 minutes to keep the game 0-0.
Mia Cence had the best scoring chance of the half as the Saints were given a long free kick opportunity. Cence's rocket of a ball sailed just over the crossbar to keep the game even.
The Bombers would add one more shot on goal before the end of the half, and also earned a free kick right outside the box but the Saints' defense stood tall on both occasions. The game entered halftime without a goal for either side.
Ithaca got their best chance of the game in the second half, when Julia Cascone appeared to make it 1-0 Bombers in the 66th minute but the officials ruled the goal back because the Ithaca midfielder stepped out of bounds just before unloading a strike near the byline off the right post and in.
The scoreless tie was finally broken in the game's 72nd minute, and it was Allie McCabe who scored for Ithaca. She settled the ball down after a high hop in the box and sent a low shot past Snode.
Ithaca then added some insurance in the 83rd minute. Ella Shorkey got a step on the Saints' defenders, stayed onside, and was sprung on a breakaway with a nice ball from Rosie Bostian. Shorkey made no mistake to make it 2-0.
Snode made six saves in the game for the Scarlet and Brown, while Grace Hickey had two.
With the first-round loss,
Sinead McSharry's side finishes the season with an overall record of 7-7-4, with a 3-4-2 record in conference play. The loss marked the first playoff appearance for St. Lawrence since 2019.
