The Saints peppered the RPI net to the tune of 21 shots, 16 of which came in the second half, but a first-half goal sent the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 loss to RPI in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament.
The Saints saw their season end at 7-6-4.
"It was a hard finish to a difficult season." said head coach
Mike Toshack I'm proud of our players going through a lot of adversity throughout the year and putting themselves in position to finish first in the league in the last game of the season. I thought we played well today. The moment we let our guard down we got punched in the mouth and credit to a well-coached RPI team to dig in and survive the onslaught in the second half. The future looks bright for the team and were very proud of our seniors who had an excellent year."
Despite controlling the game in the early moments, St. Lawrence would see themselves go down early in the eighth minute. Julio Rodriguez made an excellent run down the left side, and sent a pass into Brady Van Epps, who buried the loose ball to put the Engineers up 1-0. With the lead, the Engineers would fall back into a defensive shell for a majority of the next 80-plus minutes in hopes of preventing an equalizer.
RPI was able to get the lead into the half as Colin Such stopped both shots that found the frame from the Saints.
The Scarlet and Brown ratcheted up the pressure in the second half dominating the Engineers in possession and shot totals. In the first 17 minutes of the second half the Saints had already amassed a 7-1 shot advantage, but the lone attempt on goal was stopped.
In the minutes that followed,
Ryan Campbell and
Henry Brown would have looks on the goal that were turned away and went off the woodwork.
With just over 16 minutes left in the game, it looked as if the Saints were going to get their golden chance to tie the contest as henry Brown was hauled down in the RPI box by an RPI defender. The call was missed, putting the Saints back to work on finding a tally.
Michael McDougald and
Sam Pijpers had two of the better looks of the game down the stretch for St. Lawrence. McDougald was given a free kick outside the box that sailed just off to the right of the net, while Pijpers strike beat Such and was stopped at the goal line by a defender.
The Engineers, sensing the onslaught, played keep away and wasted time on kicks the rest of the way as the game went to 90.
St. Lawrence held the 21-14 shot advantage and had a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
Ben Woelfinger made three saves for the Saints.
St. Lawrence's bid for a three-peat ended with the loss as they saw their season end at 7-6-4.
