Ava Hartley scored her first three goals of the 2023 season in her final game donning a Saints uniform, as the St. Lawrence University field hockey team convincingly won their season finale 7-2 over Keuka Thursday evening at North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium.
Aside from Hartley's hat trick, the Saints earned goals from four different players as they snapped a nine-game losing streak to end the 2023 campaign on a positive note. The win brought their overall record to 4-12 on the season.
Saints head coach
Fran Grembowicz acknowledged the effort of Hartley, along with the other two graduating seniors
Katrina Randall and
Lucy Adiutori, who finished their last respective games as Saints.
"It wa a total team effort today and I'm so proud of our strong finish to the season," said Grembowicz, who wrapped up her 27th season as the team's bench boss. "The three seniors played outstanding, each leading the team to a sweet victory. We will be sure to take this energy into next season."
While the Saints were held to no goals in the first quarter, they came out flying. They directed 16 shots in the first quarter, a season-high total for a single quarter. They outshot Keuka 16-1 in the frame.
They were then rewarded with a goal at 16:38, right after the second quarter began.
Maggie Spire fired a shot through and made it 1-0 Saints. Then, Hartley got her first of the game shortly thereafter at 21:53.
The Saints continued to pour it on, scoring at 25:25 and 27:05, with the latter tally coming off the stick of Hartley once more.
Anna Dewey would get the Wolves on the board and make it 4-1 right after the teams returned to play in the third quarter, but then Hartley struck back with a tap-in to make it a four-goal Saints lead again at 36:36.
The Saints added two more goals from
Suzanne L'Hommedieu and
Ali Card to seal the emphatic win. They finished the game outshooting their opponents 40-9.
