Gavin Macaulay scored 19 points for the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team, as the Saints topped the Raptors of Bard 60-55 on Saturday afternoon in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
Macaulay shot 7-9, including three triples, and grabbed four rebounds and had two assists.
Aidan Macaulay went 6-8 from the free throw line to finish with 11 points.
Trent Adamson also had 11 and had six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
Bard controlled the tempo early, jumping out to a 31-21 lead with five minutes to go in the first half. The Saints closed on an 11-2 run, with five points coming from
Gavin Macaulay, and went into half-time trailing 33-32.
Both teams came out firing in the second half, and the Scarlet and Brown were connecting on more shots, leading 45-37 after six and a half minutes. Bard scored seven straight, and the game remained a one-possession game until less than a minute remained.
Bard connected from deep with just under four minutes to go to lead 55-53, but
Aidan Macaulay responded with a jumper to tie the game. Neither team could connect for the next two minutes, until the Saints worked the ball to
Trent Adamson in the paint, who hit the shot. After eating up a lot of the remaining clock, the Saints eventually got the defensive stop, and
Gavin Macaulay hit a shot to make it a four-point game. He was fouled coming down with a rebound on the other end, and hit the front end of the one-and-one and the Saints won 60-55.
"We had a nice weekend and we are happy to be off the road," said head coach
Chris Downs. "Playing Tuesday night will be a quick turnaround. Clarkson is the best 3-point shooting team in the Liberty League, and they beat us badly in our first game. A challenge for sure."
Trey Syroka had eight points, six assists and four steals. His 2.6 steals per game in league play tops the conference.
St. Lawrence shot 45.7-percent from the floor and 46.2-percent from deep.
This game marks the Saints fourth win in five games as the Saints improve to 11-6 overall and 7-4 in the Liberty League. Bard fell to 6-13 and 3-9 in the conference.
The Saints start a five-game homestand on January 31
st, when they host Clarkson at 7:30 p.m.
