Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Lapointe's Two-Goal Night Helps Power 4-2 Comeback Win Over Clarkson

Greg Lapointe scored twice to tie up the heated contest at 2-2 before seniors Tim Makowski and Cameron Buhl scored in the final minute to lead the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 4-2 win over Clarkson in game one of the Route 11 Rivalry in front of a crowd of 2524 at Appleton Arena on Friday night.

St. Lawrence improved to 12-13-0 with the win and 7-6-0 in the ECAC, while the Knights fell to 11-11-3 and 5-6-2 in league play.

In a building full of electricity, it was Clarkson, who would strike first just 37 seconds into the game. Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup would take a Dustyn McFaul pass and snap a shot five-hole to take the early lead.

Later in the first period, the Knights would double their lead when Mathieu Gosselin sent a pass to Ayrton Martino which he mishandled. Luckily for the forward the puck hit the goalpost and was laying on the goal line. The puck would barely trickle in to give Clarkson the 2-0 lead.

St. Lawrence would finally find the scoreboard at the 10:07 mark of the second period of play. Philippe Chapleau took the puck at the blueline and skipped a pass into the slot to Jan Lasak, who tipped the puck over the Knights' goal. The puck took a hop off the glass and onto the stick of Greg Lapointe at the side of the net, who fired a shot passed the out-of-position Ethan Haider to cut the deficit in half.

Later in the period, Martino found himself on a breakaway with Emil Zetterquist, but in the matchup of Hobey Baker nominees, the fifth-year netminder made the save of the game to keep the score at 2-1.

Lapointe was not done scoring as nearly 20 minutes later at the 9:38 mark of the third he would score again to tie the game. Reilly Moran carried a Ty Naaykens pass into the offensive end and weaved around two Clarkson defenders before having his wrist shot blocked. The puck fell to Lapointe, who tapped it into the empty net for the 2-2 game.

Both teams battled to break the tie, but it wasn't until the final minute of the game where that would happen.

With just over a minute left, the Knights were tagged with a hand-pass which put the faceoff into the Clarkson zone. Max Dorrington took advantage winning the draw back and was relayed from Aleksi Peltonen, to Lasak, and finally back to Makowski at the blueline. The senior captain fired a low shot to the nearside post, through a double-screen, and in for the would-be game-winning goal and the 3-2 lead with one minute left in the game.

A failed Clarkson challenge would put the Scarlet and Brown on the power play with 60 ticks left on the clock.

The Knights attempted to pull Haider for an extra skater, but a costly turnover gave the Saints' the puck. Tyler Cristall fed a pass up to Buhl, who outraced Haider to the empty net and ripped home a wrist shot to secure the win at 4-2.

Zetterquist stopped 17 shots in the St. Lawrence goal, while Haider stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced. The Skating Saints outshot their rivals 32-19 in the game.

The Scarlet and Brown went 1-for-4 on the power play with Buhl's tally, while Clarkson went 0-for-1 giving up two St. Lawrence shots and failing to register one themselves.

The rivalry will shift up north to Potsdam tomorrow night where the two teams will lineup at 7:00 p.m. at Cheel Arena.
