Jackie Malley scored a career-high 21 points as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team lost to Middlebury in a non-league game on Tuesday evening in Canton, N.Y.
The first-year went 4-7 from deep, including two in the fourth quarter, on her way to 21 points. She also grabbed six rebounds and had two steals and two assists.
Olivia Middleton and
Hannah Van Dyke each added a baker's dozen for the Saints, which included three triples from Van Dyke.
After Van Dyke hit a three on the opening possession, the Panthers scored 10-straight, until she hit another three to stop the run, and Middlebury led 21-12 after one, and expanded the lead to 14 at half time.
After three quarters, the Saints trailed by nine, but they continued to claw back. Malley hit her third three of the night to cut the lead to four. The Panthers responded with five straight, and she hit her fourth. Following a defensive stop on the next possession, Middleton hit a pair of free throws to again cut the lead to four.
Middlebury proceeded to hit their shots and their defense forced tough shots from the Scarlet and Brown and they held on for a 70-61 win.
"Really fun game in Burkman Gymnasium tonight," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "Middlebury is a very good team and we battled and had a couple opportunities in the last few minutes to cut it to a basket and just couldn't quite do it. Love the effort out of our team, and now we need to develop the consistency so we bring forth that team effort every night."
Alexa Mustafaj led Middlebury with 22 points. Augusta Dixon and Reagan McDonald also finished with double-digits. Dixon had a 17 point, 10 rebound double-double.
In addition to the Saints three double digit scorers,
Olivia Barringer had four points and seven rebounds.
Caelan McHarney had five rebounds, three steals, three assists, and three points.
"Our freshmen are really growing up in a hurry and having outstanding performances," Roiger said. "Jackie was the best player on the floor tonight despite going against a superstar player in Alexa Mustafaj. Hannah continues to play well and Caelan is learning and getting better every game. The other frosh played tonight and made contributions. Fun to see their growth and development."
The Saints fall to 6-6 on the season while Middlebury improve to 11-6.
The Saints hit the road this weekend to continue league play with RIT on January 20
