The St. Lawrence University men's golf team will open up the fall portion of the 2022-23 season with the St. Lawrence Invitational under first-year head coach
Tyler Wollberg at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course this Saturday and Sunday.
The Saints will compete against SUNY Canton, Paul Smiths, Clarkson, Utica, and Oswego.
"The Saints have put a lot of time and energy into their games this summer," said Wollberg. "The Saints are returning three of its top five from last year and has seen dramatic improvements in the games of
Aidan Daly,
Sam Lyman, Chris Odgen, and
Ben Lloyd. Mary Lawrence's last recruiting class was also a good one with James King,
Owen Donovan, and
Ryan McNamara joining the roster and we hope for some good things out of this group! We had some low preseason qualifying rounds at the SLU golf course and I'm excited to see how the team performs in competition this fall. We have seven tournaments scheduled the next eight weeks and I'm eager to see the confidence grow with each finish this season!"
In 2021-22, the Saints season started on the right foot as the team battled to a second-place finish at the St. Lawrence Invitational. Class of 2022 graduate,
William Wilson fired off back-to-back rounds at par to finish in third at the Invitational.Â
Cooper Evans (159),Â
Ben Scholes (161), andÂ
Wes Bevins (162) rounded out the Saints 'A' team.Â
The Scarlet and Brown proceeded to play at Clarkson and Williams College before heading to Paul Smith's College. Evans led the way at Paul Smith's taking second place after shooting three over par. The Saints took second with a score of 335.
Last season in preparation for the Liberty League Championships, St. Lawrence and Clarkson played a single round match at Turning Stone in late April. Scholes, and Bevins tied for second with 77's to buoy the Scarlet and Brown to the win.
Joining the roster this season are first-years King, Donovan, McNamara and
Cody Dickinson and returning for their sophomore campaigns is
Seth Bailey,
Andrew Cullen, Lyman,
Ryan McLaughlin, and Scholes.
The Saints junior class is made up of
Wes Bevins, Daly,
Cooper Evans and Llyod, while
Nicholas Aubry,
Caleb Hamblen, Ogden and
Tyler Turgeon will complete their senior seasons with the Scarlet and Brown.
Evans was a Liberty League All-Academic honoree last season, and tabbed Second-Team All-Liberty League honors as a first-year.
Following the Saints' home invitational, the Scarlet and Brown will head across town to Clarkson for a round on Tuesday, September 6 before heading to the Duke Nelson Invitational on September 10-11. St. Lawrence will also compete at the Williams College Invitational, play a round against SUNY Canton, head back to the Potsdam Town and Country Club in Potsdam for the Liberty League Fall Preview, before closing out the fall portion of their schedules at the Nazareth College Invitational on October 8-9.
