St. Lawrence University football and head coach
Dan Puckhaber welcome back
Austin Coleman M'21, as the Saints new Offensive Coordinator and have promoted
Liam Hobbins to the role of Defensive Backs Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, as announced on Wednesday afternoon.
A former offensive line graduate assistant coach for the Scarlet and Brown, Coleman has been serving as a history teacher and the head coach at Massena Central School since March of 2020. During his time at Massena, the Red Raiders went 5-4 in 2021 and were named Section X Class B Champions. He made all game management decisions, organized and create an offensive playbook, planned all aspects of practice and game day operations, fundraised for the program and created off season workout programs.
As a former member of the Saints' staff, Coleman handled all responsibilities of coaching the team's offensive line and helped design and installed all facets of the team's new record-setting offense alongside Puckhaber and other team staff – including philosophy, operation, formations, schemes, and terminology. He also recruited in New York's sections four, five, and six along with the whole state of Vermont.
"Being able to bring back a former coach like
Austin Coleman to be the new Offensive Coordinator is a real win for St. Lawrence football," said Puckhaber. "As a graduate assistant he proved how to not only coach his position, develop his players, be a leader and create winning offensive game plans, but he also was a highly effective recruiter for this program. He has had a significant amount of success as a head coach at Massena Central School and we are looking forward to seeing what he and his family accomplish in his new role."
In addition, Hobbins has been promoted to the role of Defensive Backs Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for St. Lawrence.
Hobbins originally joined the Saints' staff as a graduate assistant linebackers coach in the fall of 2021, after spending the previous three seasons as the defensive backs coach at the University of New England, adding special teams coordinator duties following the 2018 season.
Following the COVID-19 shutdown, Hobbins helped lead the Scarlet and Brown to a 5-5 record in the 2021 season. He helped coach a team that led the Liberty League in rushing defense per game in 2021 (94.5) and provided leadership and instruction in personal and athletic development of student-athletes.
Hobbins is a 2017 graduate of Alfred University, Hobbins was a two-year starter at free safety and helped lead the Saxons to an Empire Eight title and advance to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament in 2016. Prior to attending Alfred, Hobbins attended Assumption College for two years, playing in a competitive NCAA Division II conference.
"Since
Liam Hobbins arrived on campus as a GA 19 or so months ago, he has made a positive impact on this football team," said Puckhaber. "His passion and high achieving personality has been personified by his position group and truly any players he has worked with both on and off the field. This recent promotion to Recruiting Coordinator was one of the easiest decisions I've had to make since becoming a head coach and I am looking forward to seeing Liam in these expanded roles."
St. Lawrence will take on Endicott to open the 2022 season at Leckonby Stadium on September 3 at 1 p.m.
