Saints Baseball Falls 5-3 To Plattsburgh

First-years Caleb Clark and Jackson Brinker each drove in a run, but the St. Lawrence University baseball team fell 5-3 to SUNY Plattsburgh on Wednesday afternoon at Tom Fay Field.
The Saints fell to 17-16 with the loss, while the Cardinals improved to 20-15.

Jimmy Liberatore had a great day offensively as well smacking two doubles, walking once, and stole a base.

After one and a half innings of shutout baseball, the Saints broke through in the bottom of the second to make it 1-0.

After a leadoff lineout, Liberatore hit one of his two doubles on the day, which was followed by a Sean Desjardins walk. The bases became loaded after Evan Burke singled his way aboard with an infield single. Up next was Brinker, who smacked an RBI single to score Liberatore.

The game cruised along at 1-0 until the top of the fifth, where the Cardinals took the lead. Back-to-back walks followed by a single loaded the bases for Plattsburgh with no outs away. The Saints got one out on a force out to home, but in the next at-bat, a run was walked home, then a ground out to shortstop put the Cardinals up 2-1.

The Scarlet and Brown tied up the contest in the bottom half of the inning as Clark doubled home Jake Delaney, who singled his way aboard and advanced to second on an error.

In the top of the sixth, the Cardinals scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Plattsburgh bookended the offensive effort with RBI doubles while the other run was brought across by a wild pitch.

St. Lawrence got one run back in the bottom of the eighth as Brian Comerford came to second to pinch run for Drew Courtwright, who smashed a double off the left field fence. Comerford made an immediate impact on the paths stealing third, then went home as the catcher air mailed his throw to third.

Also featured in today's game was the glove of Delaney, who made two spectacular catches from his left field post. Early in the contest the senior flashed the leather on a diving fly out, but later in the game Delaney doubled down as he made a long run from left field into foul territory to snag an inning-ending out.

Christian Mingione started on the mound for the Saints and pitched two innings of one-hit ball. Dylan Barber followed with two innings of his own giving up no hits and striking out one. Huck Haun and Joe Perras pitched the next one and two-thirds innings in relief of Barber. Ethan Baldwin, Brett Parker, and Brenden O'Neil pitched the final three and a third innings giving up just one hit combined and struck out two batters.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back in action this weekend as the team will host Vassar in a best-of-three series at Tom Fay Field. The two fifth-seeded teams will line up for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m.
