Lauryn Best hit a home run and had four RBI, but the St. Lawrence softball team finished their season with a pair of 8-4 losses against RPI on Saturday afternoon in Rensselaer, N.Y.
Cora Ferguson also homered and drove in two runs on the day.
St. Lawrence 4, RPI 8
The Engineers were first on the scoreboard in the first game of the twin bill, but in the next half inning the Saints responded.
Vivian Johnson,
Stella VanGee, and
Margo Hopper each hit one-out singles to load the bases. Senior
Lauryn Best hit a single to right field which advanced eberyone one base and evened the score at one.
Cora Ferguson hit a sacrifice fly to scored VanGee and give the St. Lawrence the lead.
Sofia Adams hit a single to left which cleared the bases and put the Saints up 4-1.
The Engineers rallied in the fourth to retake the lead 5-4, and scored three more in the sixth to secure the comeback win 8-4.
Jacee Casebolt started in the circle. She pitched three innings, striking out one and giving up just two earned runs in the no-decision.
Sofia Berryhill came in to relief in the fourth, struck out a pair, and ends her first year with the Saints with a 5-4 record.
St. Lawrence 4, RPI 8
RPI scored three first inning runs to jump out to an early lead in game two. The scarlet and brown got one back in the second inning when Ferguson hit a lead-off homer to left field.
With one swing Best gave St. Lawrence the third inning lead. After
Emily Desjardins worked a five pitch walk and Hopper beat out an infield single, Best hit one over the left field wall for a three-RBI four-bagger and the Saints led 4-1.
The leadoff RPI batter hit a home run to left center at the bottom of the inning to tie the score, and a bases loaded triple gave the Engineers the lead 7-4. In the fifth a sacrifice-fly brought the final run across the plate for RPI, and they completed the sweep with a second 8-4 victory.
Casebolt started in the circle and ends her season 6-6. Berryhill threw the final three and two third innings and allowed no earned runs.
