Seniors
Nicholas Butler and
Andrew Circelli both homered, but the St. Lawrence University baseball team fell 12-6 to Hamilton College in a darkness-shortened non-conference showdown in Clinton, N.Y. on Tuesday night.
St. Lawrence saw its record fall to 14-14 with the loss, while Hamilton improved to 15-13.
Circelli went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and a double driving in three runs. Butler went 2-for 3 with a home run and a walk.
The game was all Hamilton early on in the contest as the Continentals took a six-run lead in the first two innings. Hamilton tallied two runs in the bottom of the first off a two-RBI single to right center field. In the second inning, Hamilton scored three runs in three straight at-bats to balloon the lead to 6-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Scarlet and Brown finally broke the shutout as Butler led off the inning with a solo shot to left field to get the team onto the scoreboard. Then in the fifth, seniors
Michael Goretti, and
Chris Watson each got on board with singles, then came trotting home as their fellow classmate Circelli launched a three-run home run to straight-away center field to cut the Hamilton lead to two.
Hamilton would eventually respond in the bottom of the sixth with two runs, but the Saints dialed up two more in the next half-inning. Circelli stayed hot doubling his way onto the base paths and was brought home by last week's conference rookie of the week in
Caleb Clark, who legged out a triple on a hard-hit ball to right center field.
Brian Comerford brought the first-year home with a sacrifice bunt to make it an 8-6 game.
The Saints' momentum didn't last long as the Continentals dropped four runs in the bottom of the seventh to essentially end the game. In the top half of the eighth, the Saints couldn't get much going and shortly after the side was retired, the game was called due to darkness.
Christian Mingione started on the mound for St. Lawrence and pitched one and one-thirds innings striking out two.
Samuel Fosberg was next on the hill and pitched two and two-thirds innings giving up one run and striking out one.
Huck Haun and
John Igoe finished the game for the Scarlet and Brown pitching the last three innings.
The Saints will be back in action tomorrow against SUNY Canton in a game that was moved to Tom Fay Field. The game, which will feature the Roos playing as the home team, starts at 3:00 p.m.
