The 10th-ranked St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team recorded its sixth straight win, as they defeated Clarkson 17-6 in Liberty League action on Tuesday evening in Potsdam, N.Y.
With the win, the Saints improved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while Clarkson fell to 10-4 and 1-4, respectively.
Chris Jordan led the Saints attack with four goals and six assists, while
Mark Mahoney and
Ben Murtagh both recorded three goals and one assists.
Jack Hennessey added a hat trick of his own, while
Josh Huiatt scored twice and
Stew Hutchinson and
Judge Murphy tallied one goal each.
Guthrie Little grabbed a team-best six ground balls and caused one turnover, while five Saints grabbed at least two ground balls and caused one turnover. Both
Brendan Brigham and
Padraic Condon went 7-for-13 from the faceoff dot.
The Golden Knights were first to the scoresheet, but it was all Saints after that as the Scarlet and Brown scored seven unanswered goals, with two apiece from Jordan and Murtagh, to build a 7-1 lead after the first quarter of play.
Stew Hutchinson scored off the feed from Jordan to open the second quarter and make it 8-1 St. Lawrence. Clarkson's Christian Canino was the next to score to close the gap to seven. The Saints held the Golden Knights to just one goal for the second straight quarter and increased their lead to 11-2.
The game slowed down after the break and saw two goals each for both teams, in the third quarter of play.
St. Lawrence headed into the final frame with a 13-4 advantage, the Saints got back in the rhythm with goals from Hennessey, Murtagh, Jordan and Mahoney to seal the win. Â
"It was nice to get off to a good start on the road against a good team," said head coach
Mike Mahoney. "The team is playing with some confidence and we have another big challenge coming up this weekend to prepare for."
Bryan Penney scored two goals, picked up two ground balls and caused one turnover to lead Clarkson. Four other members of the Golden Knights squad each scored once.
William Helm made 13 saves between the pipes for the Saints, while Jacob Mattice made 10 saves for Clarkson.
Both teams registered 40 shots, while the Saints held a 27-19 edge in shots on goal. St. Lawrence picked up one more ground ball then the Golden Knights, while Clarkson capitalized on 1-of-4 man-up opportunities.
The Saints will travel to RPI to face the Engineers this Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
