The St. Lawrence softball team lost a doubleheader to Ithaca on a chilly Sunday afternoon in Canton, N.Y.
St. Lawrence 4, Ithaca 11
After giving up a pair of first inning runs, the Saints were quick to get one back in the bottom of the inning.
Vivian Johnson earned a lead-off walk and
Stella VanGee hit her home by tripling down the left field line.
In the top of the second Ithaca scored two more to jump out to a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the third Johnson again led off, and again earned a walk. Catcher
Margo Hopper also earned a walk, and
Lauryn Best hit a double to the right center fence, which scored the two and made it a one-run game. The Bombers responded with a four-run top of the fourth.
Hopper led off the bottom of the fifth and singled to shallow right field. The right fielder tried to make the play at first but muffed the throw and Hopper moved to second. A wild pitch moved her to third, and
Cora Ferguson hit a sacrifice fly to deep right to make the score 8-4.
The Bombers would score three more in the next two innings, and take game one 11-4.
Slater started in the circle and allowed three earned runs and struck out two in three and a third innings pitched.
Jacee Casebolt relieved for three and two thirds and struck out three.
St. Lawrence 0, Ithaca 8 (5 inn.)
The second game started with
Gabby Slater in the circle again. Both the top and bottom of the innings saw three batters up, three batters out.
In the top of the second the bases were loaded on three walks, and Sophia Berryhill was called on to relieve Slater. The Bomber's catcher homered to left to break open the game. Four more runs would come across the plate, and the scoreboard showed 8-0.
The bottom of the third inning was the Saints' best chance at getting on the board. Johnson hit a two-out single to right, and VanGee reached on a bunt to advance Johnson. Hopper hit a screamer up the middle, but the center fielder threw a dart to get Johnson out at home.
The game was called after five innings. Slater fell to 5-5 on the season. Berryhill struck out three and gave up just one earned run in the three and two third innings pitched.
