Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skating Saints Fall 2-1 To Brown In Overtime; Series Tied at 1-1

Senior captain David Jankowski got the Skating Saints on the board late in the first period, but a buzzer-beating first period goal and an overtime winner sent the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team to a 2-1 overtime loss to Brown in game two of the ECAC First Round at Appleton Arena on Saturday night. With the series tied at one apiece, the two teams will play in a winner-take-all game three tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at Appleton arena.

St. Lawrence fell to 10-17-7 with the loss, while the Bears improved to 7-19-4.

The Scarlet and Brown got off to another fast start in game two generating plenty of offensive chances. Less than two minutes into the game Jordan Steinmetz and Ty Naaykens both had great chances that were turned aside by Mathieu Caron.

Moments later it looked as if the Saints had gotten on the board when Justin Paul directed a bouncing puck towards an unattended net. Caron was able to sprawl back to his right and get his stick on the puck in the nick of time to keep the game scoreless.

The game would remain scoreless until late in the first when the Skating Saints finally got on the board with one minute and 19 seconds left in the period. First-year defender Philippe Chapleau had the puck at center ice and dumped the puck into the Bears' zone. Senior captain Kaden Pickering ran down the loose puck and tried to jam it past a defender. The senior instead fell but while he was on the ice he managed to feed a pass into his fellow captain Jankowski, who buried the puck under the glove of Caron to make it a 1-0 game.

It looked as if the game would go into the first intermission at 1-0 until suddenly a Saints turnover went into the back of the net at the buzzer. With little to no time left in the period, Tristan Crozier attempted to feed a pass into Wyatt Schlaht, who instead accidently tipped the puck into the air and onto the stick of Luke Krys. Krys put a wrist shot off of Emil Zetterquist's mask and in as the buzzer sounded. After an officials review it was determined the goal went in with 0.7 seconds left in the first tying the game at 1-1.

After generating 24 combined shots in the first 20 minutes of action, the two teams were only able to muster 27 in the remainder of the game due to the defensive nature of both squads.

Brown nearly took the lead with just over two minutes to go in the second when Crozier got behind the St. Lawrence defense. Zetterquist came up big with the stop to keep the game tied. The Bears nearly had another great scoring chance seven minutes into the third when Bradley Cocca was sprung for an attempted breakaway. Chapleau made a terrific defensive play chasing down the skater and neutralizing the effort before it got to the net.

After a third period that saw the Saints outshoot Brown 6-3, the game went to overtime.

It took the Bears just two minutes and six seconds to secure the game-winner in the overtime period. Brett Bliss chipped the puck up to Crozier, who entered the Saints' zone and fired a centering pass toward his linemate. Justin Jallen had a step on a late arriving St. lawrence defender and tipped the puck past Zetterquist to send the series to game three.

Zetterquist finished with 26 saves in the loss, while Caron stopped 25 in the win.

It looked as if hooking calls were on sale as the officials called two on each team in the contest. Both squads ended up going 0-for-2 in their power play chances.

The two teams will now be on short rest as they prepare for tomorrow's winner-take-all game three. The game will start at 4:00 p.m. at Appleton Arena.

Ticket Information: Tickets for tomorrow's contest will go on sale tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. Tickets can be purchased online or in person at the Appleton Arena Ticket Office. The first 300 St. Lawrence University students will also get into tomorrow's game free of charge thanks to the donations of President Kathryn Morris, Student Life, and the Advancement Office.
