Nicholas Butler and
Jake Delaney each drove in two runs in game three as the St. Lawrence University baseball team earned revenge for the game two loss with a 6-5 win over Vassar College on Sunday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
The Saints improved to 9-4 with the game three win and are now 2-1 in Liberty League play. Vassar, who took game two previously to game three, fell to 6-9 and 1-2 in league play.
Game two, which was suspended last night due to darkness, was wrapped up before the start of game three.
Michael Watson, who pitched two innings in relief of
Christian Mingione in game three, earned the win for St. Lawrence. M. Watson allowed two hits and one earned run in the effort.
Brett Parker pitched one and two-thirds innings allowing no hits and struck out two to earn the save.
"We battled all day today with a really good team," said head coach
Kenny Collins "It was great to leave with two wins, especially after losing a heartbreaker in the second game. However, we need to be better in late game situations going into our home series next weekend."
Game 2: St. Lawrence 10, Vassar 11 (Continued)
Game two, which was knotted up with a Saints' seven-run inning in the top of the seventh last night, finished up before game three on Sunday. The game lasted just minutes before Vassar claimed the win.
Mingione came to the mound for the bottom of the seventh and walked the first batter of the inning. Brinster was replaced on the bags by Story, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Story then proceeded to steal third and scored on an overthrow to end the game in a blink before St. Lawrence could record an out.
Game 3: St. Lawrence 6, Vassar 5
After a short break, the two squads hopped back on the field for game three. Only this time the Saints played as the home team batting in the bottom half of each inning.
Mingione was brought right back onto the hill to start game three and was dealing to start shutting down the Brewers for the first three innings, and striking out four in the process.
Vassar eventually hit their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the fourth as the leadoff batter singled his way aboard before going to second on a passed ball and advancing to third on a groundout. Mingione forced another groundout, but the runner would score to make it a 1-0 game.
The Brewers tripled their lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth with a bunt single RBI and a sacrifice fly to centerfield later in the half-inning.
The game remained that way until the bottom of the seventh when the Scarlet and Brown hung four runs on the board. The bases went from empty to jammed in a hurry as
Cristian Forgione and
Jimmy Liberatore singled their way onto the base paths, then
Brian Comerford reached on an error to load the bases. Two batters later Butler singled his way on base and drove in two runs in the process to get the Saints on the board.
The Brewers went to the bullpen, but couldn't immediately stop the bleeding as Butler and
Chris Watson advanced into scoring position off a wild pitch.
Jake Delaney drove in two more runs for the Scarlet and Brown with a single to center field to take the 4-3 lead.
Story and the Brewers were aggressive on the base paths once again scoring in the top of the eighth inning to tie it at 4-4.
In the bottom of the eighth, Forgione broke the tie with a solo shot to right field, then C. Watson doubled the St. Lawrence lead with an RBI single to left field to extend it to 6-4.
With the game on the line, Vassar capitalized on two walks, and a sacrifice bunt to cut the lead in half to make it 6-5 on a fielder's choice play. With runners at second and third, Parker earned the save as he buried the Vassar comeback bid with a full-count strike out to close out the series.

The Saints will head to Clinton, N.Y. on Tuesday to take on Hamilton College in their third matchup of the young season. The two teams met down in Florida during spring break and the two squads split a twin bill with the Saints winning 4-2 and the Diplomats taking game two 7-3. The single game will start at 4:00 p.m.
