The St. Lawrence University softball team beat the Canton Roos twice in their first games back in the north country since their spring break trip to Florida.
Cora Ferguson had two triples and three RBIs in the first game to lead the Saints offense with
Gabby Slater pitching the shutout and striking out eight. Catcher
Kayla Minst had three hits, two RBIs and a run in the second game.
St. Lawrence 8, Canton 0 (5 inn.)
After allowing a leadoff single, Slater struck out the next three batters to start game one of the double header. In the bottom of the first
Vivian Johnson singled up the middle and Slater walked to first to put two runners on with zero outs.
Margo Hopper grounded out but advanced the runners to scoring position. Ferguson launched the ball to deep right center which cleared the bases and gave her a stand up triple.
Lauryn Best was next up, and she brought Ferguson home with a double to right center.
Slater struck out three more in the top of the second. In the bottom of the second
Stella VanGee reached on a bunt, and stole second. A Johnson single to left field was good enough to bring VanGee home for the Saints fourth run.
In the bottom of the fourth VanGee singled through the left side, and advanced to second on a Johnson ground out. Hopper brought her home on a single between the shortstop and third baseman. Ferguson hit her second triple of the day, again to right center, which scored hopper. The lead was extended to seven on a Best RBI single up the middle.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Sofia Camillieri hit a lead off single. Minst hit a pinch hit single to advance Camillieri to second.
Emily Harvey hit a pinch hit single up the middle tto score Camillieri, and with the Saints up 8-0 the game was called.
Slater improves to 4-2 on the year, and her ERA drops to 2.84.
St. Lawrence 7, Canton 3
In the second game
Jacee Casebolt took the mound and did not give up a hit until the fourth inning. The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when VanGee reached on a bunt, stole second, and on a passed ball got from second to home.
In the bottom of the third
Tori Rotundo doubled to center. She moved to third on an infield error that put Johnson on second. VanGee grounded out to third, which scored Rotundo, and Ferguson hit an infield single to score Johnson. Ferguson advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Minst singled through the left side to bring home Ferguson.
The Roos finally broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single following a walk. Jordan Knapp doubled to clear the bases and make it a 4-2 game.
In the bottom of the fifth St. Lawrence had a two out rally of their own. With two outs the Roos had a chance to get out of the inning but could not secure a popped up foul ball. The Saints used this chance to score three runs in the inning and extend the lead to 7-2.
Canton got one back in the top of the sixth, and
Sofia Berryhill relieved Casebolt with one out in the sixth. Catcher
Kayla Minst caught a Roo stealing, and Berryhill struck one out to get out of the jam. In the bottom of the seventh Berryhill fanned three more to clinch the game for the Saints 7-3.
Casebolt improved to 2-2 on the season. Berryhill struck out all four batters she faced, and her ERA of 1.66 is the second lowest in the league.
