Saints Top Rochester in League Opener, Improve to 6-0

The unbeaten St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team kept its high-scoring offense going with a 19-7 victory over the University of Rochester in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Saints improved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Rochester fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League.
 
St. Lawrence spread the scoring around with nine players scoring goals and five had two or more. Morgan Arakelian scored three goals and added two assists, while Isabel Silvia and Charlotte Powell with four points apiece. Gracie Giannettino led Rochester with three goals.
 
The Saints scored two goals on man advantage and struck four times from the free position. There was a brief flurry that ignited the Saint offense. Rochester took a 3-2 lead seven minutes into the game, but Jacqui Cloutier scored from the free position and Arakelian's first goal put the Saints up, 4-3. Rachel Burke scored from Jaime Allan's pass with Rochester playing short and made it 5-3 after one.
 
Silvia and Arakelian combined for three rapid-fire goals that helped the Saints storm in front. Silvia struck at the start of the second quarter (6-3) and Arakelian converted a free position to make it 7-3 with 12:50 left.
 
The Saints scored six unanswered goals to seal the win.
 
"The team battled back after a slower start," said head coach Chelsea Martin."The defense had another solid game today and offense got in a groove in the second half. The team continues to work hard and show enthusiasm, heart, and hustle each game."
In goal, Raelynn Bovenzi made 10 saves and allowed seven goals on 24 Rochester shots. Rochester's Ava Saffren made 11 saves for the Yellowjackets.
 
Grace Crochiere collected six ground balls, caused two turnovers, and won five draws.
 
St. Lawrence held a 38-24 advantage in total shots (30-17 in shots on goal).The Saints converted on 15-of-24 clears. The Saints won 18 draws to 12 for the Yellowjackets.
 
The Saints return to North Country Field to host Ithaca on Friday, March 25 and William Smith on Saturday, March 26. Game times are set for 3:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
