The Saints' bats were hot in game one of today's doubleheader, and
Nicholas Butler's bat was hot all day driving home three runs in each game as the St. Lawrence University baseball team settled for a split on Friday afternoon in their final games in Florida.
St. Lawrence moved to 7-3 with the split, while SUNY Fredonia went to 9-4.
Butler drove in six runs total in the divided twin bill bringing his season total to 11 RBI.
Senior
Andrew Matthews pitched six innings giving up five hits, four runs, and struck out nine batters to earn the win during game one.
"Today was another doubleheader split where some mistakes caught up to us in game two," said head coach
Kenny Collins "We have a lot to work on between now and our next series against Vassar, and we're looking forward to getting back up north. Overall the trip was a success and the guys enjoyed being back in Florida, but the real season starts now."Â
Game 1: St. Lawrence 15, Fredonia 4
In game one, Fredonia took an early two-run lead in the top of the first, but the Scarlet and Brown answered right back in the bottom half of the first. The Saints' started with a single, hit by pitch, and walk to load the bases with no outs. After a pop up to the right fielder,
Jake Delaney drove in two runs with a single to left field to tie the game at 2-2.
The Blue Devils yet again scored two runs in the second inning to bring the game to 4-2.
The contest remained 4-2 until the bottom of the fourth where the Scarlet and Brown would take the lead. After a
Ryan Courtwright double,
Stephen Colangelo hit a fly ball to center fielder which was dropped allowing Courtwright to score. Things only got worse for Fredonia as
Brian Comerford singled his way aboard, then a wild pitch advanced Colangelo home. Two consecutive singles from Butler and
Andrew Circelli extended the lead to 6-4.
St. Lawrence blew the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth as the Saints hung nine runs on the board.
Cristian Forgione started the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second. A walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Butler, who drove in two runs with a single. The Saints forced another hit by pitch and two more walks to make the game 10-4. R. Courtwright srove in a run with a sacrifice fly, then Forgione knocked one home with a single. Â The cap on the inning was provided by
Caleb Clark, who, unloaded the bases with a three RBI double to make it 15-4.
Senior

Game 2: St. Lawrence 3, Fredonia 7
Fredonia once again struck first in game two with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Also, like in game one, the Saints answered back with two of their own, this time in the third inning.
Brian Comerford and
Chris Watson were given free rides to first after being hit by a pitch. Next to the dish was Buter, who sent his teammates home with a two RBI triple to center field.
The Blue Devils answered back emphatically in the bottom half of the same inning regaining the lead with four runs to make the game 6-2. Fredonia added one more run in the next inning to extend their lead to five.
The Saints were only able to get one run closer in the seventh inning as Clark was driven home by a Butler sacrifice fly to right field.
Jack Sylvia, who started game two, pitched five innings in the game giving up six hits, and struck out seven. Sylvia game up six runs but only one was earned.
John Igoe pitched the final inning for the Saints giving up no hits and striking out one.
Next up:
The Scarlet and Brown, who finished their Spring Break trip 7-3, will head home and start prepping for their Liberty League opener next weekend. The Scarlet and Brown will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. next weekend to take on Vassar College. On Saturday the 26th, the two foes will play a doubleheader starting at noon, then on Sunday will play just one game which starts at 1:00 p.m.
