Saints Fall to Yale in Game Two of the ECAC Quarterfinals

Box Score Nara Elia and Aly McLeod scored, but Yale's power-play unit helped lift the second-seed and seventh-rank Bulldogs to a 4-2 win over the seventh-seeded St. Lawrence University women's hockey team in game two of the ECAC Quarterfinals at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn.

Much like Friday night, the Saints would strike first again. Abby Hustler pulled the puck off the boards in the neutral zone, tipped the puck to Aly McLeod, who found Nara Elia flying into the slot. Elia lifted the wrist shot over the shoulder of senior goaltender Gianna Meloni for the 1-0 lead at the eight minute mark of the first period.

It wasn't long before the Bulldogs would tie it up. Yale entered the power play on a Saints holding penalty, and Olivia Muhn passed the puck to Emma Seitz, who sent a shot past Lucy Morgan from the left circle to tie the game with 1:09 remaining in the first.

After one period of play, the Bulldogs held a 13-6 lead in shots.

The Saints increased their lead to 2-1, as Chloe Puddifant sent the puck into the zone and Aly McLeod tipped the deflection over the blocker of Meloni at 7:16 for the one-goal advantage.

Seitz added her second of the game at the 17 minute mark to tie the game 2-2, and just 13 seconds later off the faceoff, the Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead on a goal from Anja Trummer.

The Bulldog's Charlotte Welch tacked on one more goal to increase Yale's lead to 4-2 at 7:48.

With 3:47 to play in the third, the Saints pulled Morgan for the extra attacker and played 6-on-4 for two minutes, while Kaitlyn Rippon was sent to the box on a checking penalty at 16:26.

The Scarlet and Brown played the remainder with the extra attacker, but despite some good chances in the final minutes were unable to find the back of the net before time expired.

"Even though Yale had some stretches of the play today we had enough chances to get to 3-1," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "Meloni made some great stops in the middle of the second and then again when we had the goalie out. We came down prepared to play three and that's what we will do. The last couple weekends have us ready to play this amount of hockey on a weekend."

Morgan finished with 31 saves for the Saints, while Meloni finished with 13 for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs went 2-for-3 on the power play, while the Saints went 0-for-2.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 15-14-7 on the season, while Yale improved 23-7-1.

The Saints and the Bulldogs will meet tomorrow at 3 p.m. for the final game of the best-of-three ECAC Quarterfinal series in New, Haven. Conn.
