Nine Saints to Make 2022 Olympic Appearances

St. Lawrence student-athletes and alumni will represent Teams U.S.A., Canada, Denmark, and China as they compete for gold in women's ice hockey, skiing and skeleton racing at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

"To have future, current, and former players participating in the Olympics is a testament to how far the talent and determination of St. Lawrence students can reach," said St. Lawrence Women's Ice Hockey Head Coach Chris Wells '92, P'23, '25. "Saints' fans can expect to see hard work and a love for their sports from Laurentians."

Saints Women's Ice Hockey forward Anna Segedi '23, who will represent China, says it's the opportunities she's had on and off the ice at St. Lawrence that prepared her to compete at the Winter Olympic Games.

"SLU has helped me in so many different ways to become the player and person I am today," said Anna. "The coaching staff has developed my skills and knowledge on the ice, teaching me so much about my game and always pushing me to become the player I want to be. In the two years I have been at SLU, the coaching staff has always pushed me to become the best version of myself, on and off the ice, and I will always be grateful for all their support."

While several St. Lawrence student-athletes are hitting the ice, Skating Saints alumna Alison Domenico '09 will be calling the shots as one of Team Canada's assistant coaches.

"Hockey is in my blood, it's my passion. But the athletes are just such an important piece. It was a big reason why I got into coaching," said Domenico in an interview with CBC Sports published on Friday, January 21. "My coaches had such a positive impact on me as a person and a hockey player. And I thought being able to have that ability to do that for other people would be unbelievable."

As Anna prepares to compete in a preliminary matchup against the Czech Republic on Thursday, she says the transition to Beijing has been smooth thanks to her student-athlete experience.

"Being a student-athlete requires a lot of work in order to keep up on both ends," Anna said. "My experiences at SLU have taught me about being dedicated and committed, which have been helpful on the road to Beijing. I didn't know what to expect going into this journey, but I felt well prepared and ready to put in the work."
