Emil Zetterquist stopped 31 shots for his first career shutout, and the Saints' first line combined for seven points as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team defeated Brown 4-0 at Appleton Arena on Saturday night to sweep their last home series of 2022.
The Skating Saints leveled their record at 8-8-0 and improved to 5-3-0 in league play, while Brown fell to 4-9-2 and 1-7-2 in league with the loss.
"That's an important win heading into the holiday break," said Charles W. Appleton II Head Coach
Brent Brekke "Three game win streak to finish the first half was a goal we set as a team and the guys made it happen. Pretty special to get the shutout for Zetts and you'd could see the excitement of the entire team for him. Great to see!"
The first period was a penalty-filled one that saw St. Lawrence with three chances, including a 5-on-3, while Brown had two chances of their own.
The Skating Saints earned their first attempt roughly eight minutes into the contest and cashed in.
Philippe Chapleau held the point for the power play and made a wall-pass to
Ty Naaykens, who bumped it back to the sophomore. Chapleau launched a low wrist shot on the net that deflected first off a Bears' defender, then off
Jan Lasak and through the five-hole of Mathieu Caron to take the 1-0 lead.
It took just 4:02 in the second period for the Saints to double their lead.
Drake Burgin head manned a pass that was deflected at center ice by Naaykens. Lasak scooped up the puck, skated to the face off dot, and laid out a perfect cross-ice pass to
Max Dorrington, who was charging the goal. Dorrington's tip beat the off-balance Caron to take the 2-0 lead.
Brown was afforded two more power plays in the second period and outshot St. Lawrence 14-4 but were unable to beat Zetterquist. Â
The same story prevailed in the third period as the Bears were given three more power plays as they searched for their first goal of the contest.
Once again in the third, the Skating Saints prevailed and scored their third of the contest. Naaykens once again made a play knocking the puck to Dorrington, who fed a pass to
Mason Waite at the blue line. Waite sidestepped an oncoming winger and skipped a low shot that went off Dorrington and in to give the Scarlet and Brown a 3-0 lead with under nine minutes to go.
Brown, who, was in desperation mode trying to get back into the game, pulled the goalie which immediately backfired. Shortly after Caron left the Bears' net
Luc Salem caused a turnover on the Saints' end boards where
Josh Boyer would sail the puck 200 feet down the ice and in to put the score at 4-0.
Brown continued to push for a goal as the Scarlet and Brown looked to preserve their shutout. In the final minutes Zetterquist got help with three Saints' blocks and stopped two of his own to preserve the shutout. The clean sheet is the first in the illustrious career of Zetterquist, who was playing in his 90th career game. The netminder finished with 31 saves including 14 in the second period barrage to earn the blank scoreboard.
Caron stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced in the Bears' net.
Brown outshot St. Lawrence 31-26, in part to their seven powerplay opportunities. The Bears came up umpty handed going 0-for-7, while Zetterquist and the Saints' penalty kill went 0-1.
The Skating Saints will head into finals week then will have a break until after Christmas when the team travels to Omaha on December 30 for a two-game set with Nebraska-Omaha.
