Rachel Bjorgan notched an unassisted game-winning goal, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team completed the series sweep of Syracuse, topping the Orange 5-3 on Saturday afternoon during Laurentian Weekend.
Today's win also saw five different goal scorers, as the Saints improved to 3-3-0 on the season, while Syracuse fell to 1-4-0.
The Saints opened the game on the power play and just 58 seconds in, Hustler put the Scarlet and Brown on the board first after
Kristina Bahl slipped the puck back to
Julia Gosling, who found Hustler at the blue line for the 1-0 lead.
Gosling would have a hand in the second goal as well, as she found
Anna Segedi just above the crease. Segedi tipped the puck past Syracuse's Arielle DeSmet to put the Saints up 2-0 with four minutes to play in the first period.
The Orange battled back, as Anna Leschyshyn and Sarah Marchand tallied back-to-back power play goals to knot the game 2-2 by the end of the first frame.
Syracuse would open the second period scoring, as Rayla Clemons flew into the Saints' zone and found Sarah Thompson on the door step to take a 3-2 lead on a shorthanded goal.
After 12 scoreless minutes, Bahl circled behind DeSmet and fed Gosling in the slot for a tie game once again.
It was Bjorgan that tallied the game winner, as she capitalized of a turnover deep in the Orange zone, giving the Saints a 4-3 edge at 6:22 of the third.
Hillary Sterling tacked on an insurance goal for St. Lawrence, as she scored her first goal of the season off the feed from
Shailynn Snow.
"We were able to find a way to win after giving up a two goal lead," said head coach
Chris Wells. "It feels good to win always, but to find different ways to do it early in the season is a big boost."
Â
"Our power play scored some nice goals and goals four and five were good hard working goals that we needed at that time. It is a long season and the first part has been just what we needed. We will take next weekend off to rest and then we will be back at it for another 6-7 week stretch."
Â
Morgan finished with 16 saves for St. Lawrence, while DeSmet made 33 for the Orange.
Â
The Saints capitalized on 2-of-5 power play opportunities and the Orange finished 2-for-4. The Scarlet and Brown also finished with a 38-19 advantage in shots.
Â
St. Lawrence has next weekend off and will return to action at the NCAA Ice Breaker in Lake Placid, N.Y. on October 21-22. The Saints will take on Holy Cross on Friday at 4 p.m. and either Clarkson or Syracuse on Saturday.
