Sophomore goalkeeper had 23 saves in net, and the St. Lawrence University field hockey team lost at the University of Rochester 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets dominated possession and broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second quarter off of a penalty corner. Nikki Mercer scored her second of the day four minutes later, and Rochester led 2-0 at the midway break.
Mercer completed her hattrick less than three minutes into the second half, tapping the ball in from two yards out.
22 seconds into the fourth quarter,
Jenny L'Hommedieu deflected a shot off a Yellowjackets' stick into the cage. Rochester responded with a shot of their own, which went wide, and the Saints followed that with earning their first penalty corner of the afternoon. L'Hommedieu sent the shot wide, which would be the last chance for St. Lawrence.
Rochester maintained an advantage in shots on goal (27-1) and penalty corners (15-1). Vredenburg's 23 saves are a career high, over doubling her previous best.
Head coach Fran Grembowicz
"It was good to see the team rally in the fourth quarter. Scoring 22 seconds in really sparked the us. Cara played an outstanding game in net, knocking down shot after shot."
