Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Duscio Nets First Collegiate Goal, Saints Fall to Clarkson in Ice Breaker Championship

First-year Katina Duscio notched her first collegiate goal, but the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell to No. 11 Clarkson 3-1 in the championship game of the NCAA Ice Breaker in Lake Placid, N.Y. on Saturday.

Duscio along with Aly McLeod, who scored two goals in yesterday's semifinal matchup earned All-Tournament team honors.

Anne Cherkowski struck first for the Golden Knights, as Darcie Lappan slid into the high slot and found Cherkowski in the right circle for the one timer and the 1-0 lead at 7:20 of the first period.
Shots between the teams were tied at 18 after one.

Lappan added her name to the scoresheet for the second time with a goal of her own, lifting Clarkson to a 2-0 lead just two minutes and 15 seconds into the second.

It was Duscio, who would bring the Saints within one with her first career goal in the Scarlet and Brown. Julia Gosling rushed the puck up the right side, sent the puck back to Abby Hustler, who found Duscio in the left-hand circle for the goal through traffic.

"I saw the puck and found some ice down low and shot looking for the open net and it bounced off their player and went in, which certainly worked out for us with that bounce," said Duscio.

Despite heavy pressure from the Saints throughout the majority of the third, Cherkowski notched her second of the game firing a shot past Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan, just under the crossbar for the 3-1 advantage.

"We played a solid game this evening and I feel if we continue with that effort we will get to where we want to be," said head coach Chris Wells. "Clarkson did a great job executing on their goals and blocked shots all night especially in the third when we were putting on some great pressure. Always fun to play for a championship and tonight was not exception. We will get back at it next week as we open up play in the ECAC."

Morgan recorded 18 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Michelle Pasiechnyk made 25 for the Golden Knights.

Despite the score, the Saints finished with a 58-43 edge in shots, including 26-21 in shots on goal. The Golden Knights finished with a 29-28 advantage in faceoffs and went 1-for-2 on the power play.

St. Lawrence moved to 4-4-0 on the season, while Clarkson improved to 8-1-1.

The Saints head back to Appleton Arena and open ECAC Hockey play, as they faceoff against RPI on Friday, October 28 at 6 p.m. and Union on Saturday, October 29 at 3 p.m.
