Daniel Lawther connected with
Robert Coll and
Clayton Fogler's field goal was good, but the St. Lawrence University football team fell to Hobart 31-10 on Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium.
Lawther passed 15-for-32 for a 173 yards and one touchdown, while
Cameron Giunta finished with 25 yards on seven attempts. Coll finished with three catches for 58 yards and a touchdown, while
Daniel Greene also tallied three receptions on the afternoon. Giunta and
TJ Cornacchia both recorded four receptions.
Ryan Watson led the Saints' defensive unit with 11 tackles, one for the loss, a sack for five yards and one pass breakup.
Reece Gillette also talled 11 tackles, one for the loss and
Victor Gamberoni tallied two breakups.
Hobart was first to the scoreboard as Tobias Wefering sent in a 35-yard field goal giving the Statesmen a 3-0 lead.
The Saints' defense proved strong from the start, as Watson took down Hobart quarterback David Krewson with the sack and a loss of five yards on the third down.
The 3-0Â score remained for the majority of the first, until Rayshawn Boswell snuck in on a one-yard run for his first touchdown of the day. Wefering's kick was good and Hobart held a 10-0 lead after one.
Tim Denham Jr. added his first touchdown of the afternoon with a three-yard run, capping an 80-yard run for the Statesmen.
The Saints kept swinging and broke a seven quarter scoreless streak, as Lawther connected with Coll for a 24-yard touchdown. Fogler's kick was good to bring the game within 10.
Fogler kicked a 31-yard field goal just before time expired in the second to bring the Scarlet and Brown within seven at halftime.
After a defensive battle to start the third, Denham Jr. scored his second touchdown on a one-yard run, increasing Hobart's lead to 24-10. Boswell recorded his second on a four-yard run to seal the win.
Krewson passed 14-for-26 and finished with 147 yards, while all the Statemen's touchdowns came on the ground. Tim Denham Jr. rushed 74 yards on 18 attempts for two touchdowns, while Boswell rushed 63 yards on 19 attempts for another two touchdowns. Alex LaBella finished with seven catches for a team-best 101 yards. Anthony Romano finished with six tackles, including two for the loss, while Alex Karpawich recorded one sack.
The Statemen finished with a slight 24-17 edge in first downs and finished with 325 total yards on offense to the Saints 243. Hobart also held an advantage in time of possession 38:42 to 21:18 and converted on 6-of-15 third downs to St. Lawrence's 3-for-12.
St. Lawrence fell to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play, while Hobart improved to 4-3 and 1-2, respectively.
The Saints will hit the road and head to Rochester, N.Y. next weekend when they face the Yellowjackets on Saturday, October 29 at 1 p.m.
