Green Scores a Pair, Saints Win 5-1 Over Oneonta

The St. Lawrence University field hockey team improved to 2-0 with a victory over SUNY Oneonta in Canton, New York on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Mckenzie Haberl scored on a breakaway in the third minute of the game to put the Saints ahead. The Red Dragons evened things up when Claire Mahoney fired in a backhand shot from the top of the circle off of a penalty corner at the start of the second quarter. After that, it was all Saints.

Senior Maggie Green gave the Saints the lead five minutes later off a restart beating two defenders before she found the back of the net. Shortly after Ava Hartley scored off a Haberl pass to put the Saints up 3-1 at halftime.

Late in the third quarter senior Marlee Paterson fired the ball to the far post where Green dove to put her stick on it a record her second goal of the game. The final goal came on a first-year connection, when Anna Coyne found Mackenzie Marcus on the far post to tap it in her first goal as a Saint.

"We came out on fire in the second half, we kept the pressure up," head coach Fran Grembowicz said of her team. "Oneonta is always a fierce opponent and we know they're never going to quit, so we knew we needed to come out and work hard though the second half. We were able to capitalize on some break opportunities today which I hope we can continue to do."

First-year Cara Vredenburg played all 60 minutes for the Saints in the net, and recorded three saves in the win. Kristby Campana made 10 saves for the Red Dragons.

The Saints outshot the Red Dragons 19-4, and had 12 penalty corners to Oneonta's five.

St. Lawrence improved to 2-0 with the victory, Oneonta fell to 0-2.

The Saints take on New Paltz Sunday at 11:30 a.m. on the final day of the North Country Invitational. New Paltz took down Utica College 7-2 in the first game of day one.
