James Cronin was 5-for-7 with a home run, two doubles and two stolen bases to lead the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a split in the team's season-ending doubleheader at Skidmore on Sunday afternoon.
The Saints lost the first game 10-7, then rebounded with a 7-4 win in the second game.
St. Lawrence finished the season with a 12-12 overall record under interim head coach
Kenny Collins, the first time the Saints have posted a .500 or better record since the 2014 season. With a 7-9 record in conference play, the Saints did not qualify for the Liberty League tournament.
"It was great to end the season on a high note," said Collins. "I am so proud of the effort we had this season. Special congratulations to the seniors who made everything possible."
Game 1: Skidmore 10, St. Lawrence 7
St. Lawrence led 5-4 after four innings in the seven-inning contest, but Skidmore tied the game in the fifth inning and scored five runs in the sixth to build a 10-5 lead. The Saints scored two runs in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to three, but could get no closer.
Cronin was 3-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Andrew Circelli was 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI for the Saints, and Nichols Butler was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Sam Browning was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead Skidmore at the plate.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 7, Skidmore 4
St. Lawrence scored in six of nine innings, with two runs in the fourth, and four different pitchers combined to limit the Thoroughbreds to four runs to lead the Saints to a season-ending win in the second game.
Michael Goretti was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Saints at the plate.
Matthew Killian was also 3-for-5 for the Saints. Cronin was 2-for-3 with a double, and
William Montgomery was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Cristian Forgione was 2-for-5 with a double.
Four different players had multiple hits for Skidmore, led by Jake Hardy, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Ryan Carson was the starting pitcher for the Saints, allowing two runs on three hits in three-and-a-third innings.
Cameron Morrissey picked up the win in relief, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work.
Brett Parker finished the eighth inning, getting two quick outs, and
Liam Reiner picked up the save, allowing just one hit in the ninth inning.
