The St. Lawrence University women's tennis team used its depth to defeat William Smith 5-4 on Saturday afternoon in Geneva to claim the No. 2 seed in the Liberty League tournament.
Â
The Saints finished the regular season with a 6-1 record in conference matches. With an abbreviated schedule this year due to COVID-19, tournament seeds are determined by winning percentage. Skidmore earned the No. 1 seed with a 7-2 win over Vassar, which fell to 4-1 and is the No. 3 seed. The Saints will host the third-seeded Brewers on Wednesday in the semifinals, with the time of the match still to be determined.
Â
Gabriella Dadoly and
Meredith Macey won the No. 3 doubles match, but the Saints fell behind 2-1 after doubles play. The Saints were able to overcome three-set losses at No. 1 and No. 2 singles with straight-set wins at No. 3 through No. 6 from
Rachel Caplan,
Elena Styliades, Macey and
Caitlyn Avery, respectively.
Â
St. Lawrence is making its first appearance in the Liberty League semifinals since 2018, and the second-place finish in the conference standings are the best for the team since it claimed a share of the Liberty League title in 2016.
